The Secret of Atlantis

Chris Boucher, February 16, 2003

A game, a story, an art project, a myth
(… The truth?,… a money-maker?)

Part A: The Land:

- An island that is in the shape of the yin-yang, which itself is simply the path taken by a spear's shadow throughout the course of the year.
- At the point corresponding to the summer solstice is Yahweh, a golden colossus standing astride the entrance to the harbor. The gateway to Atlantis. He represents the self-assertive tendency of humanity. He is also the male aspect. His likeness is reflected in this stage by the great wonders: the Colossus and the statue of Zeus. His golden colors: Red, orange, and yellow are reflected in the first three temples. He is the sun.
- At the point of the winter solstice stands Astarte. A silver woman standing in the classic Venus pose. She represents the integrative tendency of humanity. She is (obviously) the female aspect. She is represented by the great wonders The Temple of Artemis (her Greek counterpart) and currently by the Statue of Liberty. Her colors: green, blue, and purple are reflected in the last three temples. She is the moon.
- Spring Equinox: Chaos (for it is out of chaos that comes life)
- Autumn Equinox: Order
- There are 6 temples located on the island (marked in the picture as blocks):

Temple Domain Color Shape # Rulers
Temple of the Dragon Western Religion, Dogmatism Red dodecahedron 5
The Great Library Science & Engineering Orange Icosohedron 4
The Tao Balance, Eastern Religion Yellow Octahedron 3
Stone Henge Magic, Witchcraft, Hermetic knowledge Green Cube 2
The Madman's Hut Shamanism, Creativity, Madness Blue Tetrahedron 1
The Philosopher's Stone Personal communication with the creator/creation Purple Sphere 0

These temples represent the path of knowledge taken by man in every age. There have been 3 ages of man so far (we are the third), each lasting 26,000 years, which is a galactic year (the time it takes our solar system to revolve around the galaxy). In all ages man begins and ends at the philosopher stone, which is a direct communication with the creator/creation. This is the time of a major evolutionary jump. It is well known amongst archaeologists that evolution occurs in major jumps. I'm proposing this occurs every galactic year, perhaps due to our passing a certain point which causes a flip in the earth's magnetic field. This causes global devastation - the apocalypse if you will, but also rapid evolutionary jumps. It is at this time that 'gifts' are given to each species according to their needs.
In the last age of man, which culminated in the island of Atlantis, we did not have the gift of language. We had language, but regions of the brain known as Broca's and Wernick's area had not been developed making language something of a chore. Language to humans now is engrained. It was one of our 'gifts' during the last evolutionary wave. But in Atlantis, language required rituals for reinforcement. Sort of like practicing math times tables. Another of the 'gifts' we were given was the knowledge of good and evil. This was not known to the people of Atlantis, as can be judged by neither end being represented in the Cardinal points of Atlantis. It should also be noted that after every evolutionary wave, we start over from scratch. The combination of all these elements is what came to be known in our era as 'The Fall' as described in Genesis and virtually every other religious cosmogony. Atlantis was Eden.
In our current age, it is approximately 13,000 years since 'The Fall'. i.e. we are about halfway through our journey, standing at the temple of the dragon awash in dogmatism, but moving quickly forward into science and engineering. (I would put the exact halfway point somewhere in the years 2012-2050 when the current prophecies say something big is going to happen) When I say 'we' I refer to the average of all humanity. Just as a temperature reflects the average energy of atoms in a gas, there are always atoms moving faster and slower than the average. Therefore, there are always humans present in all stages of development.
After 'The Fall', or the last evolutionary wave, we started over. Shamanism was our religion. This progressed through 'magic', 'tao', 'science', and 'religion'. We are now starting our way back. This is the 'New Age' everyone talks about.

So follows the path of the temples. Oddly, I've realized recently that the path, which seemed to unfold as I designed the temples (and the myth), matched closely my own search for the truth.

Part 1: Yahweh

The Temple of the Dragon
The Temple of The Dragon

Description:
The first temple, the (Red) Temple of the Dragon, stands facing Yahweh. In this temple man's integrative tendencies have fully enveloped him (as the temple stands farthest from Astarte). At this point it is culture, which is self-assertive, in the form of religion. As such, the temple is designed in a Judeo-Christian-Islamic form, which also happens to look like a dragon (also reflecting the importance of the serpent in these religions). The building in the middle is, in fact, St Paul's Cathedral. I thought the Major Temple (the head), as well as the towers, looked Islamic in origin. I have to admit ignorance to what a Jewish temple looks like, but I think I'm close enough to get the point across. This temple is represented by the dodecahedron.
This temple is a 'reflection' of the Shaman's hut. The Shaman integrates with nature, and as such represents personal, individual madness. The dragon represents full integration with culture, leading to madness once again in the form of religion. It is well known amongst those who study culture that dogmatic religion is the cause of the majority of madness in the world - Bin Laden and his followers are a perfect example. As would be the Inquisition, Salem witch hunts, the war in Ireland, etc.

Ruler:
The ruler(s) of this temple will be the 5 archangels: Lucifer, Uriel, Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael

The Great Library
The Great Library

Description:
The second temple, The Great Library, is styled after a medieval village. The castle itself will contain the library, which will in turn contain 'Abulafia', the great book and author. The library interior will be four-dimensional and styled after the short story 'The Library of Babel' by Jorge Luis Borge (I have this if you want to read it). This temple represents Science & Engineering. The rectangle containing the entire scene is a Golden rectangle in the ratio 1:1.618 (or 0.618:1, that's why it's golden). This ratio (actually an irrational number like pi) is considered the mark of beauty in everything from architecture to human faces. There are two large rectangles and three smaller ones encased. There are two water and two land squares, split between small and large. The third small rectangle reflects the entire scene, with slight modifications in a chaotic manner. Here the smaller square contains a house, which is an exact replica of the one in the castle. Of course, the rooms will once again reflect, then the furniture, then the items on a table, ending finally with a map of the whole area. 6 levels. Cool. 6 specifically, and multiples of three in general, should be used often as possible. This temple is represented by the icosohedron.
The Great library stands halfway between the temple of the dragon (cultural madness) and The Tao (balance). As such, it stands in the perfect position (along with Stone Henge) for the advancement of man. There is no advancement at either the balance point, due to it being balanced, and no advancement in the dogmatic temple of the dragon. Science is the study of the parts of the whole.

Rulers:
There will be 4 rulers of this temple. Perhaps Thoth (Egyptian God of intelligence) and three other mythological gods who represent intelligence.

The Tao
The Tao

Description
The third temple, The Tao, is styled after a Hindu-Buddhist-Tao temple. It consists of a path (hence 'Tao', which means 'The Way') of bridges and islands around various statues styled, in part, after Anchor Watt. 60 islands in all. The path represents the ascent of man as well as the periodic table.
- 1S orbital: atoms, molecules
- 2S crystals, self-replicating molecules
- 2P self replicating systems (organelles, cells, etc.)
- 3S multicellular life (sponges, mushrooms, etc)
- 3P Organ differentiated life
- 4S Society and Culture
- 3D The human Soul
- 4P Cultural interaction culminating in civilization
- 5S Astral plane
- 4D, 5P reflection of our plane on astral plane
- 6S mythological god level (Zeus, Odin, Osirus, Vishnu, etc.)
- 4F left side (sinister) is hell, right side is heaven.
- 5D, 6P the gods and they're interactions.
- 7S old god level (Gaia, the Titans in Greek mythology, etc.)
- 5F, 6D, 7P - reflection of god level
- 8S - the creator and creation
Notes:
- heaven and hell (as we see them) are simply reflections of each other; all we really need to know is which side you're planning on going to, so we can meet up.
- The 'sense of self' always lies at the last S back. For humans this would be the cultural level, which is actually the case.
- 5S represents life after death. It is like our world except that thougtforms are real. You can control every aspect of everything around you. This is the place contacted by psychics. It is possible to come back from this point, as in reincarnation. In fact it is necessary, in order for a soul to learn everything it must.
- The ones filling the 6S level to us are the Atlanteans. 7S is Mu.
- The s, p and d orbitals are styled quite well after their actual shapes.
- As I have no idea what f-orbitals looked like, I guessed. I used a motif styled after the human brain with a reptile, mammal, and human face pillar. It also has a single inward-looking 'death' orbital, which represents immortality
- That the f-orbitals have animal faces can be used to explain the animal faces attributed to the gods.

The 8S level will be on an island 3 times bigger than the rest (as if the pattern were about to repeat itself on a larger scale) and contains the temple. The temple is once again designed in the golden ratio, from the rectangular bases to the pyramidal roofs. It also designed in the shape of a fractal with upper tower reflecting in the middle, and both again in the base. 3 level tower, 6 encasements total.

Rulers:
There are three rulers, the first being 'The Yellow Emperor' - a very important figure from Chinese mythology (oddly this is also the 'yellow' temple!) as well as two others who epitomize the balance.

Part 0: The Myth

Interlude

The Tao represents a balance point between all temples as well as for man himself. It is the place of serene happiness. Eden if you will. When the equilibrium 'temperature' of humanity reaches this point, there will be enough of us, advanced far enough to speak, once again, to the creator/creation for all of humanity. Thence will come 1000 years of peace - the new Eden that will be known to our heirs as Earth instead of Atlantis. This will be followed of course, by the apocalypse, the evolutionary wave that engrains our new gifts into us (psionics? (ESP, telepathy, telekinetics), mathematics? Extra-dimensional thought?) and The Fall. Our planet will once again be thrust back as it passes the Galactic 'point-of-change' and the magnetic field flips causing volcanic eruptions, droughts, floods, plagues, famines - you know, all the stuff in Revelations. Those humans who had advanced far enough - those who spoke to the creator/creation - will move on to a higher level of being. To those left behind, they will be a new pantheon of Gods (once the 'Fallen' have advanced far enough to have Gods - it'll be that bad). They will once again be seen as both human and animal (and combinations of both as in Anubis, Centaurs, Vishnu, etc.), and of course immortal - which they are. This is reflected in the orbitals of The Tao. There are pillars representing reptilian (brain stem & spine), mammalian (archicortical) and human (neocortical) aspects of the brain. The Fallen (as they will once again call themselves, although this is a misnomer - they are more like 'The Chosen', as they were chosen to receive the new 'gifts') will once again make a pantheon of jackal/eagle/reptile/whatever-headed gods formed from the cultural memory of the previous age.

There will also be those who do not receive the 'gifts'. As such they will remain in their current state, that is… human. This will be worst thing. As the changes in the planet will make humanity a dying breed, just like the Neanderthals. Of course some will survive well into the new age, hiding in forests and mountains. Maybe they'll once again be called 'bigfoot', 'yeti', 'abominable snowman', and the like.

Everything is cyclical.

When the evolution wave passes over, a process known as neotony takes place. What this means is that we become 'adult' at a much earlier stage in our normal development. This process is responsible for our loss of hair since the Atlanteans (who were harrier than us). Now, if you'll remember, our current age is the third age of man. The archetypes of the second age, Atlantis, make up our pantheon of gods. Their pantheon was made up of humans from the first age, Mu. To us, the Mu gods are known as the 'old' gods. The Titans in Greek mythology - Gaia, Kronos, Prometheus (he really was he first human to discover how to make fire), etc. A funny thing will happen when this age ends however. The first humans, those of Mu, will be advancing from the 7S to the 8S level - i.e. humanity will become one with the creator. As such, this is the last age of man. Ours heirs will have gone through a very drastic neotonous change this time around, becoming much more fetal in appearance - big head, large black eyes, smaller stature, thin build, no hair. We are already seeing ripples of these beings; we know them as 'Greys'. That we are already seeing them may mean that they discover time travel. Their return is nothing more than an archeological expedition as they try to learn where they came from.

Part -1: Astarte

Th Great Henge
The Great Henge

Description
The fourth temple takes the form of Stonehenge. It is represented in mythology not only by the real Stonehenge, but also by the statues on Easter Island, all monolithic stones throughout Europe, the Washington monument, etc. They have also been called the 'Green Tablets of Hermes' (once again, a real thing which I discovered after I had made the 'green tablets'). At this temple we have crossed over into the domain of Astarte - the female, integrative aspect of life. This is the temple of magic. The fount of not only witchcraft, but also sexuality in it's most sensual and pleasurable aspect. At its center stands the 'Tree of Life' - an apple tree. In fact the apple tree from Genesis. The myth states that Eve offered the bite since we are in the domain of Astarte. Of course this was fully condoned by the 'Church' as can be understood from the presence, and enticement, of 'the serpent' which was the top Archangel - Lucifer. Of course, after The Fall, humanity was pretty ticked off, thereby making Lucifer the ruler of hell. As a matter of fact, he did go to the other side of the 5F from the other four Archangels, but this was only for purposes of balance.

This temple stands opposite in nature to the Great Library. As opposed to the study of the parts of the whole, magic is the study of the whole which is greater than it's parts. It too stands betwixt the balance and madness. As such, it is just as important to the advancement of man as science. It represents the intuitive side of thought - understanding the whole all at once. Not surprisingly, the majority of great twentieth century scientists stressed the importance of the intuitive side in their discoveries.

Rulers:
The 2 rulers of this temple are Lug (a.k.a. Odin, Woden) whose current preferred form, that of a human torso with a goat's legs and bull's horns on his head, is sometimes confused with Lucifer. This may in part be due to the similarity of their names. It is Lug to whom the Witches prayed to and received their guidance, not Lucifer. The other ruler is Hermes - hence 'Hermetic Wisdom' is what magic is currently known as.

The Madman's Hut
The Madman's Hut

Description
The last temple, which will be part of the 'game', is The Madman's Hut. This is the hut of the Shaman. It is where we began and where we will eventually return. The Hut stands at the base of the statue of Astarte. Here humanity stands alone as a (wo)man and culture is fully integrated into him. He represents the spiritual interests of the entire tribe, and finally, of all humanity. Our best foot forward. He represents the ecstasy, the experience of something greater than ourselves. The madman's hut is the source of all inspiration, all creativity. In taking all of human culture into one person, all sorts of new mixtures emerge. The madman is represented in culture by a number of figures including, but by no means limited to, Cerunnos: leader of the wild hunt and Santa Clause. The madman has the gift of prophecy: the understanding of the cyclical nature of creation. As such, he knows that which was, will be repeated. Perhaps not in the exact same form (just as the Great Library reflects inward, but with changes - this is chaos theory) but close enough to be predicted metaphorically. His hut stands beside the Well of Life whose waters flow from the Tatwic heart of the planet. This well runs over the Crystal Falls (or whatever) into the river Styx which, in turn, flows into the yang- within-the-yin lake which makes up the 'dot'. These waters not only nourish the soul, but heal the body as well. After falling into the river Styx, they offer the blessing of 'forgetting' ones sins, which is the first step towards forgiveness for the soul. One item of note is the bull's horn, which he uses to drink from. This stands out as very important in current mythology. You may also notice the 'plants' and mushrooms growing in the area. You see, it was all part of the plan that we would use 'natural' pharmacology, in the form of cannabinoids and fungal alkaloids, to enhance the effects of ecstasy. This is simply nature's way of communicating with us - consider it a 'Babel Fish' or, if you haven't read the Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy, a Rosetta Stone, or a Universal Translator as seen on Star Trek.

The Philosopher's Stone
The Philosopher's Stone

This is where it all began. Our Cro-Magnon ancestor was sitting on a rock, holding his spear (garnished with the feathers of an eagle) when the evolution-wave passed over earth. And what he'd always suspected, he now knew. For his mind connected directly with the One. It was just for an instant, but an instant for the One is an eternity for Man. And he knew of more than himself. Soon enough, another will return to this place. To direct contact with the One. This will be when the Galactic 'point-of-change' is passed once again. Only this time, our species will become one with the creator/creation (i.e. become one with the One), and thus 'extinct'. Our heirs (the 'Greys') will continue on beyond us as the One learns more of itself, as it explores every possibility.

Part B: The Game.

I see the game unfolding in the following way:

- There will be six 5-part codes, which will have to be deciphered in order to hear the final…
'Secret of Atlantis'
- These will be one-time pad ciphers as shown in 'The Code Book'.
- All temples will be accessible at all times (or perhaps after an initial task). Each will contain six scrolls (books, hieroglyphs, inscriptions, whatever) which will have to be matched and decoded with the six from the other four temples.
- The scrolls will be hidden in each temple; getting harder to find with each temple. (don't worry about the size of the temple outside, they are all 4-dimensional (sort of like a holodeck) and allow for all possibilities)
- There will be riddles to answer in this quest, just like the first one, but much less emphasis. Say 1 in the dragon temple going up to 5 in the madman's hut.
- Each temple will have a 'game'. Let's say something like the Molson Canadian Mile (Frogger) for The Tao, Blackjack with Tarot cards for Stone Henge, whatever. I know how to easily make a number of mindless but addictive games (remember minesweeper?) but I really would like to do something original (or at least at new take on something else) for each temple.

Part 0: The Secret

I want the secret of Atlantis to reflect my own thoughts on what it's all about. So this is what I think.

There is only one thing: thought.

Simple enough concept, but in complete agreement with all current religions, science, meta-physics, spiritualists, psychics, what have you. The source, the One is not based in Order, as we have been lead to believe. Life is the Chaos that sprung free from Order. After reading the books The Turbulent Mirror and The Ghost in the Machine, I came to understand the whole CHAOTIC picture. I'm not sure if you've seen a picture of the Madlebrot set or not, but in it, I saw the explanation of everything I was looking for. If you look at the Mandlebrot set from a 'distance', that is from an integer level, you see a straight line (Order) extending for approximately half the graph after which it 'explodes' into a cardioid (heart) shape which flowers into spheres upon spheres. It is quite beautiful. But there is more to it. If you look at a closer magnification (say between 0.00000001 and 0.000000002) you find the SAME pattern.

These are the levels of life. Sure it's probably not exactly the same as the Mandlebrot set, but it does provide a superb visual tool. The levels of atoms (which themselves are just thought-forms) are reflected in the levels of consciousness (which is just another word for awareness, and gravity is an 'awareness' of other matter).

But in the end, it is all 'Just a Thought'. An idea being carried out in the mind of a being in a universe similar to ours, who in turn is being thought of in another universe, and so on, until eventually it comes full circle. In essence, the thinker thinks him/herself.

Part i : A Message from the Creator

The game will start with a message from the creator of the game (me) which can, of course, be skipped over quite quickly before starting the game. In it I will talk about how I designed this as something of a story (fate) and something of a game (chance). It was not meant to be easy. You don't learn anything from easy. But it was meant to be fun. The level of fun derived from it will depend on you. And always remember not to take things too seriously. After all, it's just a game.

This will also be the Secret of Atlantis.

After all the codes have been deciphered, and the player sits down on The Philosopher's Stone, he gets the full message from the creator/creation. Which is the same message I gave about the game itself.

Pretty cool ending huh?

It signifies the fact that you really have to search for the truth before you can understand it. Even if it is handed to you on a silver platter from the start. (Plus I like being an ass)

Part C: The Story

Although I really like my myth, myths are dead without a story to bring them to life. A story is a 4-dmiensional picture, a process. Just like us. Good ones can take on life of their own. Although I consider this one of the most important parts of the project, I haven't put much thought into it (yet).

But I can see a storyline unfolding in which the two souls, which will become the next Adam & Eve, find each other. One soul, Kaden, will be situated in The Great Library (the temple of science) the other, Tricz, will be situated in Stone Henge (the temple of magic). They will be enticed to take the next step for humanity by the eternal trickster: Rzeznik. They will be the ones who accept the 'gifts'. The ones who take The Fall. The ones who give birth to the 'Greys'.

This is just an idea. (A pretty good trailer for the game, if you think about it)
