Legion of Honor History: in 1802 Napoleon founded the honorary French society "Legion of Honor" to recognize distinguished military and civil service. During World War I, Shriners' from Maine were impressed by their many pleasent experiences with legion of Honor members in France and upon their return to this country in Janruary 1919, they chartered Portland Legion of Honor at Kora Temple in Lewiston, Maine as the "First and Oldest Legion of Honor unit in shrinedom.: During the 48th annual Session of the Imperial Council as San Francisco, in 1922, Imperial Potentate Ernest A. Cutts, of Alee Temple, announced the launching of the formation of Legion of Honor units to include veterans of all conflicts since the Civiil War. Several Legions of Honor units were organized in the following years and by 1931, eight temples had Legion of Honor Units. On 29 June 1931 seven units formed the National Association of the Legions of Honor and were given official recognition by the Imperial Potentate Esten H. Fletcher of Damascus Temple. By 1961, 52 units had been chartered in the National Association and there were seven Non-National Units. Today there are 157 Legion of Honor Units affiliated with the International Association comprising a membership of over 13,400 members. Our continuing purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of their country and foster a spirit of patriotism and love of country and flag. |
