The MCAS El Toro, Memorial Project (sometimes called the A4 Skyhawk Project) is an effort to keep the memory of MCAS El Toro, California alive in Orange County. It will provide a lasting tribute to the men and women who worked and served on the base.
This web site is dedicated to publicizing and informing visitors of the project, it's status, and providing historical information about Marine Corps Air Station El Toro's rich and proud history.
The memorial will consist of an A4 aircraft mounted on a pedestal in the War Memorial area of the Santa Ana, California Civic Center. The aircraft will most likely be a decommissioned A4E (BuNo 150001) or A4M (BuNo 160031). The pedestal will be surrounded by concentric rings of bricks bearing the names of donors to the project. Various other memorial plaques from donors will also be placed about the area as will a historical rendition of the airfield, its people and its history.
The A4 Skyhawk was one of the smallest jet aircraft in its type, and was used primarily for close air/ground support, with the ability to fly low and fast in support of ground troops. The Skyhawk provided the link between the air support and the troops on the ground, thus helping to save lives and accomplish the Marine Corps Team mission.
Two potential aircraft have been identified and the Memorial Team is in the planning stages of the project. Completion is expected in the early months of 2002. Anyone wishing to contribute financially and/or with labor is welcome to assist.
