I think Darby Crash does a total flip in his grave every
time he thinks of his high school buddy and co-founder of the
Germs Belinda Carlisle doing Almay commercials and listening to
Robert Goulet. Then again, knowing Darby maybe he doesn't. Yeah, Belinda was the original punk girl. Rent Urgh, A Music War and you'll se what you mean. She was a big fat yellow-haired punk rock girl. Cool huh? Along with buddies Jane Drano, Elisa Bello and Margot Olivierra she formed the Go-Go's. She's not the best singer, but then again neither is Madonna. Belinda lived with Jane in the Canterbury punk flophouse and my theory is she hung out with X a lot. I like to think about her having hot steamy sex with Billy Zoom because I would have. She even wrote a couple Go-Go's songs, including one of my favs Skidmarks on My Heart |
| In the past few years I've really started to admire Belinda. A lot of people slag her off as a no talent. Reviews many times point out her voice as being the weakest link (goodbye! Sorry I had to do that) in The Go-Go's chain. But Belinda deserves her snaps. I don't think I've seen a review that ever points out that Rick Nowels and William Orbit started out working with her. In fact when Madonna's Ray of Light came out people seemed to go out of their way to ignore that fact. Certainly Belinda could have stepped forward and claimed some credit. Also, even though Belinda has a huge gay following (actually the whole band does) she doesn't take advantage of it. Unlike Cher who jumpstarted her career from life support by releasing an album directed specifically for the gay market (come on who honestly believes that "Believe" was released for teens?), Belinda hasn't. I really hoped that she would remix some of the new songs on her last greatest hits album, but she didn't. |

I also have to give Belinda credit for taking responsibility for her actions. I've read numerous interviews where both she and Charlotte say that the decision to disolve the Go-Go's was their decision and theirs only. Both of them take responsibility for being total druggies etc. But I really started to respect her when I heard back in 1999 when she was asked if the Go-Go's would put out a new album and stay together she basically said that the band now had families and those were their top priorities. Good for her. Since I mentioned the gay thing I have to mention that Belinda has now decided to take the ultimate step and pose for Playboy. The issue will be released on July 3, 2001 and will probably be sell to as many fags as breeders. I've also heard that her boobs are looking pretty perky. I guess I'll have to get a copy as well. I'm currently working on sections dedicated to each of the bandmember's solo work. That should be up in the next few weeks. So keep looking. |
