Simply IRC

There are a number of problems with regular IRC. There is usually some (normally, a lot!) of lag. Also, you get harassed by other people who want you to join their cheesy chat rooms. If you simply want a quick connection to chat with another person then "Simply IRC" is for you.

"Simply IRC" works by connecting your computer DIRECTLY (well, as directly as is possible on the internet) to the other person’s. You DON’T go through one or more IRC SERVERs. You DON’T have other people connected to you to harass you or slow down your connection.

How it Works.

When two people want to talk, each person must have the program set up on their PC’s. (for information how to do this, see SETUP instructions below.) One person will set the program to run in SERVER mode, and the other will set the program to run in CLIENT mode. The CLIENT program must know the IP (internet protocol) address of the SERVER.

Normally, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) you connect to assigns you a new IP address each time you log into their SERVER. So each time the SERVER person logs into their ISP, they will have to let the person who is running in CLIENT mode know what their IP address is. The easiest way to do this is for the SERVER person to email a message to the CLIENT person. When the CLIENT person gets the message, they can look at the message properties. The IP address of the sender (the SERVER person) will be listed somewhere in the email properties.

(Another way for the SERVER person to determine what their IP address is, is to for the SERVER person to go to the DOS prompt and type in ROUTE PRINT at the command line. Your IP address at your ISP will be one of the one’s listed. You can then email that to the CLIENT person).

NOTE: You will have to do this each time you dial into your ISP.

Why all the Hassle with IP Addresses?

In order to get the fastest connection to one another, you want to go through as few links as possible. When you get the CLIENT to connect to the SERVER via the SERVER’s IP address, you eliminate the need for both of you to connect to a IRC SERVER, and then to each other. This also means that other people can’t interupt you, because they will have no link to you.

It IS a little more difficult to go through this process, than with regular IRC programs (especially if you are unfamiliar with IP addresses), but the benefit is well worth it. It’s FASTER and more secure. It is also SAFE, because your IP address is different each time you connect to your ISP.

Take some effort to get the IP address of the SERVER to the CLIENT, and you will see the benefits immediately.

Installing the Program.

The program is compressed in ZIP format. Use a regular "unzipping" program (like Winzip) to unzip the setup files to a temporary directory. Once they are unzipped, find the file called "Setup.exe" and run it to start the setup program. Follow the instructions, and the program will be installed to your hard drive. (REMEMBER, for you to be able to connect to anyone else, they must have the program setup on their PC as well.)

Running the program:

Note: One of the two people must be in SERVER MODE, and the other in CLIENT mode so there will have to be some communication between you two as to who will be in SERVER mode and who will be in CLIENT mode. (The best way is via email). Also the person who is in SERVER mode, needs to communicate what his/her IP address is.

SERVER MODE

Make sure you are connected to your ISP, and that you have sent your IP address to your intended partner.

When you start the program, you will be asked to indicate which mode you want. The options are:

Select the first option (I want someone to connect to me. (SERVER MODE)) and click on OK.

The next screen is the options screen.

In the CONNECTION tab…

The one option you HAVE to set is your name. Feel free to use you real name, because no one other than your intended partner will be able to see it. And it will make it more personal.

The IP address field is unavailable, because you don’t need it in SERVER mode.

In the GENERAL tab…

Here you set the timeout interval (Timeout must be a number greater than zero). In SERVER mode you do not have to worry about the timeout value. It is used when in CLIENT mode when trying to connect to the other person.

You can also choose to log your chats to a text file and specify where you want to save the file.

The program will then load.

Click on the CONNECT button. They program will then wait for your partner to connect. When they do, you will see a message in the message area that the person has connected, and the program will send them one, saying you have connected.

CLIENT MODE

Again, make sure you are connected to your ISP, and that you have the IP address of the person you are connecting to. (They HAVE to be connected to their ISP in order to have the IP address.)

Start the "Simply IRC" program.

In the first screen, choose the second option:

I want to connect to someone. (CLIENT MODE)

And click on OK

In the options screen that appears next (connection tab), type in the other person’s IP address, and your name.

In the general tab you can set the Timeout value. 30 seconds is sufficient.

Click on OK, and the program will load.

In the status bar, the program will indicate that it is trying to connect to the IP address you typed in.

When a connection is made, a message will appear in the message area indicating that you have connected to the person, and the program will send them one indicating that you are connected.

TimeOuts

If the program times out while trying to connect, you will be given the option to keep on trying. Keep on trying a few times. If you still can’t connect, see the troubleshooting section.

Registering your program.

When you install the program, it will be unregistered. The program will be assigned an authorization number which will be used to register the program. Email (or post) the authorization number to me, and when I receive your $5 donation, I will send you the serial number which will UNLOCK the program, and allow it to run in registered mode. You will then enter the serial number in the screen that you can access from the ABOUT box.

The unregistered version is FULLY FUNCTIONAL, but you will be pestered from time to time with nag screens. Also, your chats will be limited to 100 lines per session. When registered, the nag screens and the 100 line limitation will be removed.

Post your checks (or money orders) and make them payable to:

Grant Porteous

1410 Washington Memorial
Suite #303
St Cloud
MN, 56301

With your email, or postal address, and the Authorization Number, so I can send you the serial number to unlock the program.
