Update: The Velveteen Lop PASSED their first Presentation at the ARBA Convention in Kentucky.......October, 1999!
The Official Home of the Velveteen Lop
You've heard about them, you've talked about them, you thought you had seen them but you haven't.......until now!
Introducing
The Velveteen Lop

English Lop vs Velveteen Lop
See.......the Velveteen Lop is a Miniaturized version of the English Lop including the mandolin type but they have rex fur!
Left...Sr English Doe....15#....25" x 6-3/4" ears (normal fur)
Right...Sr Velveteen Lop Doe....6#....16" x 3-1/2" ears (rex fur)
ok, let's start...........
They've gotta have those English Ears

![]()

10-12 day old babys......look at those ears.....
Look at those Roman Noses....lots of width of the head
awwwwwwwwwwww!

4 week old babies (Torte, Blue Torte & Broken Blue Torte)......Look at the bone on them, the ear length... already, notice ear position low on the head with openings toward us..........and very wide well filled muzzles.

11 week old babys (same babies as above)
Look at the width of the ears, flat heads, no crowns, it's baby fur, but it's rex, no protruding guard hairs and good length.

12 week old baby (blue torte).......notice the rise and the depth...indicating depth necessary to show a good mandolin arch. Also, ears opening toward the front, mounted low and flat headed (no crown). A crown controls the ears & turns the ears to the head causing the wrong presentation of the ears.

Senior Doe (Torte) - Rex fur well within the length parameters weight 6# ear length 16" x 3-1/2".......This is same rabbit pictured with the Senior English Doe weighing 15#.

Senior Buck (Blue Torte) - Look at that mandolin type, smooth curve starting at the back of the shoulders rising to a high point over the center of the hips, rex fur, flat head (no crown), ears attached low on the head facing correctly. Weighs 6-1/2# ear length 17" x 3-3/4".
OK, now look at this..............

YES.......................................NO
See the one on the left.....that's what we're working toward.
The one on the RIGHT is a NO NO............we call them MULES. They have commercial type, pear shaped head (not an English head), crown very apparent controlling the ear position making it face toward the cheeks. Ear shape and substance very incorrect.....creased and thick and has too much substance. Ears are spear shaped & creased not wide and rounded at the tip. (The mule does have great depth and he hits his depth over the center of the hips & he has pretty good rex fur) Everything has a good point even if it is just a great personality.
We plan to include the history of the development of the Velveteen from the beginning. Here's just a little history......
The first certificate of development holder, Virginia Menden in California, gave up her presentation rights in 1994 giving the Certificate of Development rights to Paul Lewis in New Mexico. His first presentation rights came up at the Portland, Oregon ARBA Convention in 1998. Because of El Nino he just couldn't come up with the babies necessary to present then and then it got worse cause Mother Nature was playing tricks and he didn't get the liters necessary to move along with his breeding program.
Mary Crawford of the Houston area came in line behind Paul Lewis. She did have some animals on display at the 1998 Portland, Oregon ARBA Convention but they were not there for the official ARBA Presentation.
This April Paul Lewis, wanting to not impede the breed, passed the Official Presentation Rights along to Mary Crawford and now they have to be presented and passed 3 out of 5 years with no 2 consecutive failings. And a missed presentation is counted as a failing. Once you have the rights you have to present................
So, now we've gotten to this part...........if you want any information on the Velveteen Lop, Mary Crawford is the person to talk to.........she has been working on this breed for 5 years as of June of 1999.......her first liter was born June 10, 1994.
Please note.....until there
has been one successful presentation at an ARBA Convention (and
we had that this year at the 1999 ARBA Convention in Kentucky) and it is printed
in the January/February Domestic Rabbits Magazine there is no official Working Standard................
Well, Mary's finally on the net. You can reach her at
Post script..........There was no moritorium on the sale of Mary's Velveteen Lops, how could there have been a
moritorium on them when, until the 1999 ARBA Convention in Kentucky, Mary had not sold any Velveteen Lops to anyone...anywhere!
The first offerings of stock was at the Louisville, Kentucky ARBA Convention and believe me, stock was limited.
