The World Championship is over and the new World Champion is Topalov. He won 6, drew 8, lost none. He was followed by Anand, Svidler, Morozevich, Leko, Adams, Kasimdzhanov, and Polgar.
The World Championship is half way thru and it's Topalov, Svidler, Anand, Morozevich, Leko, Kasimdzhanov, Adams, and Polgar. Edward Winter's Chess Notes for October 6, 2005 (#3958) mentions my celebrity list that was used in Maurice Ashley's Chess for Success on pages 251-268. Then Winter writes "...and, of course, provides not a scrap of substantiation for any name put forward." Well, I have documented most of my sources on my web page, with over 800 entries. See my "famous people who play chess" at http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lab/7378/famous.htm.
The world championship starts in San Luis, Argentina on Sep 28, 2005. My prediction to win is Anand, followed by Topalov, Svidler, Leko, Adams, Morozevich, Kasimdzhanov, Judit Polgar.
I had an email and phone call from Ed Labate, who now sells his chess books on ebay. When I get out to California again, I need to autograph some of my books for him. They seem to be selling well. Arlen Walker and Susan Polgar sent me some more names of celebrities who play chess, which I updated on my chess page. Susan celebrated her birthday at the Broadway hit "Little Women" and someone sent me some nice photos of the event. AJ Goldsby has noticed my website is getting less and less available due to exceeded data transfer limit for a free website. I may soon have to pay for it if I get more complaints.
Susan Polgar (happy birthday, today) wrote an article for Chessbase on chess in the mainstream world today and gave me credit for the list of celebrities, published in Chessville and edited by David Surratt. She emailed me and included a few more names, which I added to my list. Thanks to Howard Goldowsky for making sure I got acknowledged for my articles.
Updated my list of famous chess players (Chessville posted my celebrity article), my list of when masters learned how to play chess, my traps (short games), and some more additions to my trivia. Tim Tobiason of Toby Chess emails me about my problem with reading the Ultimate Chess DVD, and offers to replace it with a complete set of CDs. I was able to copy the files I had trouble opening on the DVD after opening them up on a Mac with Acrobat, saving them on desktop, then transfering it to a PC on the network and copying them on a few CDs. I like the idea of chess books in PDF format and collected together on DVD. Happy Birthday Bobby Fischer.

Added several new chess links to my chess link page.
Watched the movie Ray, which had a chess scene from Ray Charles's real life. The movie is about a blind musician who is a great singer and song writer hooked on heroin. He is addicted to heroin and wants to go cold turkey. His doctor teaches him chess. He is cured of heroin, but in now addicted to chess. For the next 40 years he does not create a single new song because he is now addicted to chess and has lost his creativity with music. The only violent scene in the movie is when the doctor beats him in a chess game. Ray Charles goes crazy, knocks the peg chess pieces from the table, throws the table and would have killed the doctor if he could see him (the doctor sneaked out of the room). To make it fair, the doctor should have played blindfold chess.
My friend Tom Katsampes posts our 75 chess games on his internet site. We probably played dozens more in San Antonio in the mid 1990s.
Tim Krabbe's open chess diary reports that the Grand Ayatollah ali as-Sistani of Iraq has forbidden chess and it is absolutely unlawful (but cricket, oral sex, and anal sex is OK with the Ayatollah). Chessbase news is also reporting it. My friend Sean Evans from Canada asks, do the U.S. troops know that chess is forbidden in Iraq? A lot of soldiers are playing chess when there is nothing to do in Iraq (hurry up and wait). That's what I did was play chess during my 4 years overseas in Southeast Asia, Okinawa, Guam during the Vietnam War. When there was nothing to do I played chess at the USO, on the flightline, in the chow hall, aboard aircraft, in the rec center, in the dorms. We worked 12 hours a day and had one day off a week. But chess was not banned (just don't let the Colonels and Generals see you playing chess).
I get a letter from Randy Mont-Reynaud (Jordy's mom) that Jordy is getting back into chess. Jordy and Vinay Bhat were America's two youngest chess masters that I coached when I was President of the Palo Alto Chess Club in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Wrote two more chess articles for Black & White magazine in India. I have been contributing monthly chess articles to them for almost a year now on chess trivia and short games. The publisher is Shilpa Mehraa The editor-in-chief is Suman Mehra. The managing editor is Junaid Ahmad.
I finish 2 DB books (books by Wenman) for Giorgio Laderchi.
Got my 4th volume of Kasparov's On My Great Predecessors and reading through that. All four books are excellent.
I finish my second Spence book for DB books (Giorgio Laderchi). Spence's books have more errors in his books than I have ever seen in a chess book. Moves are missing, wrong, out of place. etc.
I contributed some chess remarks about Bobby Fischer for Lawrence Totaro at http://www.msnusers.com/baysholis . I play a King's Gambit miniature on the Gaming Zone.

My friend Arnold Denker died in Fort Lauderdale at the age of 90. I met him at one of the Space Coast Opens and had breakfast with him. He forgot his chess clock, so I let him borrow mine. I left the tournament and came back later to find Denker analyzing a game. I asked him where my chess clock was. He said he didn't know. He forgot where he put it. It wasn't at his table. I thought I had my chess clock ripped off. Later, the tournament director gave me my chess clock. Denker had given it to the tournament director to give to me since he could not find me. But Denker forgot to tell me this. So much for the memory of a grandmaster.

Chessville does a nice review of my web page.
IM John Donaldson helps me in my research on Bobby Fischer's tournament and match record, and his first USCF ratings. Updated my web site to reflect that.
Some discussion on the net that I am not a real person at http://www.chessgames.com and that it is a group of 11 men posing and dressing as Bill Wall. It is actually 9 men and 2 ladies posing and dressing as Bill Wall. We all live by the ocean and are known as Ocean's Spray 11. Our group consists of wall, crafty, sorcery, browneyes, batgirl, Mister Rogers, Master Bates, sloan, Harvey Wallbanger, Count Leopold, and Wlod. What would you rather believe? Is there really a Bill Wall or really an Edward Winter? Maybe Bill Wall is really Edward Winter or vice versa. Me being a real, existing person was discussed in rec.games.chess.misc back in 2000. Come on guys, I am real. I got a brick with my name on it in front of the US Chess Hall of Fame (or was that Chess Wall of Fame).
My house gets a direct hit by not one, but two hurricanes in Palm Bay, Florida. Lost a roof, garage ceiling collapsed on my car, some rooms flooded, but only chess damage was one of my chess sets on display in my living room got soaked when water came in from the roof and ceiling. My pictures of hurricane damage appears in several issues of Florida Today newspaper.
Sarah's Chess Journal at http://www.batgirl.atspace.com has a brief Tribute to Bill Wall. She defended my from those Edward Winter attacks (my 10-watt searchlight on the web) in her March 6, 2004 blog.
