Jacky Tar at various gigs, and in various forms, in NZ.

Here are some pictures I've taken over the last year or two of the Wellington band, Jacky Tar. Since I've been listening to them
they've gone through a few changes, membership-wise.
Initially, it was Dawn on drums, Oscar Bullock on fiddle, Andy Kerr on Guitar and Gareth Thomas on bass (and very occasionally but impressively, accordian). Then Dawn left for Canada where she now makes guest appearances on the Captain Tractor page. She was replaced by Mo (aka Andrew Moen but don't tell anyone :), formerly of Banshee Reel. Then Gareth left to live in Auckland (where he apparently now plays on occasion with The Trouser Weasels). He was replaced in December '97 by Manu.
In October '97 (ie pre-Manu) they recorded a 6 track cassette, largely consisting of their own arrangements of traditional tracks, at the Church in Wellington (with additional backing vocals on Wild Rover by Nick McGowan of Shanakie and latterly demon accordian player with Banshee Reel).

The tracks on the tape are :
Poor Mans Labour
Wild Rover
High Reel ect (sic)
Mother (a somewhat modified Paul Simon song off Graceland)
Shoogle
Old Woman from Wexford.

More pics of the band in Palmerston North, early September 1998

In late September of 1998 there was a wee hiccup with Manu and Oscar not being able to play outside of Wellington because of work commitments. Various musicians were seconded for a gig in Palmerston North under the dubious name of 'A Parcel of Tar' (a reference to Andys 'other' band, A Parcel of Rogues where two of the substitutes (Nick and Grant) were stolen from). This also featured 'Shetland Shirly' on occasional fiddle and constant Irn Bru :).
