As it has in the past and continues presently to welcome visitors from the region and from abroad, the JCC is always happy to arrange and/or coordinate tours of the Cairo synagogues and the Geniza exhibits by appointment, prior notice and planning is expected. Any organisation planning such a visit should therefore first contact the JCC regarding the suitability of dates and activities...

It has accidentally come to the attention of the Cairo JCC that Ms. Ada Aharoni and Ms. Levana Zamir of Israel are organizing what they dub a "tour of Cairo and Alexandria by the Congress of Jews from Egypt."

The said 'Congress' is proposing a trip to Egypt on 25 May 2008 in cooperation with:

• The Israeli Academic Centre in Cairo which will host "a full day session at the Academy."

  This has been forcefully denied by the incumbent head of the Academy Professor Rosenbaum, who specified that the tour participants may visit the Academy for an hour or so only. There won’t be any talks or meeting with Egyptian personalities; neither will there be a "day full of conferences" as advertised by the promoters of said Congress.

• Tour of the Cairo synagogues including a visit of the Geniza exhibition preceded or followed by prayers at Shaar Hashamayim Synagogue.

  Unfortunately Part II of the advertised program cannot take place since both the Cairo JCC board and its members refuse to have anything to do with this pseudo Congress.

• An invitation by the JCCA (Jewish Community Council of Alexandria) to attend a dinner at its Nebi Daniel headquarters "followed by prayers led by Abraham Dayan" who was hazan in Alex four years ago.

  Yet it now transpires that the promoters of the said Congress have been duly notified by the JCCA president that there is no dinner planned and that the the Congress tour members, in view of their number, can visit the synagogue contingent to having complied with the required safety security checks applied under such circumstances.

  As for Abraham Dayan, he presently lives in Italy and is no longer the Rabbi of the Alexandria Jewish Community.

This notice is published by the Cairo and Alexandria Jewish Community Councils so that those who choose to participate in the proposed Congress tour will know what to expect.

La Communauté juive du Caire a accueilli par le passé et continue à accueillir aujourd'hui des visiteurs de la région et de l'étranger et organise volontiers à leur intention sur rendez-vous des visites des Synagogues du Caire et du musée de la Geniza. Naturellement il convient de la consulter au préalable. Toute organisation envisageant une visite de ce genre est donc priée de bien vouloir consulter préalablement la communauté concernant la date et les modalités d'une telle visite.

La communauté juive du Caire a appris par hasard que Mesdames Ada Aharoni et Levana Zamir d'Israël sont en train d'organiser ce qu'elles appellent "Une visite au Caire et à Alexandrie sous les auspices du Congrès des Juifs d'Egypte".

Ce congrès prétend organiser ce voyage en Egypte le 25 Mai 2008 en coopération avec:

1) Le Centre Académique Israélien au Caire lequel "tiendra une session dans les locaux de l'Académie." Cette affirmation a été catégoriquement démentie par le directeur actuel de l'Académie, le professeur Rosenbaum, qui précise que les membres du groupe ne pourront qu'effectuer une visite d'une heure environ sur place au cours de laquelle il n'y aura ni conférence, ni rencontre avec des personnalités égyptiennes. Il n'y aura certainement pas "Une journée de conférences" comme l'écrivent les organisateurs.

2) Il propose "la visite des synagogues du Caire et notamment une visite de la Geniza précédée ou suivie par des prières à la synagogue "Shaar Hashamayin". Ceci est tout à fait impossible car le bureau de la Communauté et ses membres se refusent à coopérer avec ce soi-disant congrès.

3) Les promoteurs dudit congrès prétendent avoir été invités par la Communauté juive d'Alexandrie à participer à un dîner à leur siège de Nebi Daniel "suivi de prières conduites par Abraham Dayan qui fut Hazan à Nebi Daniel il y a quatre ans."

Cependant il s'avère que le président de la communauté d'Alexandrie a informé les organisateurs que les membres du groupe ne pourront prier à la synagogue que s'ils ont obtenu toutes les autorisations nécessaires. Quant à Abraham Dayan il réside désormais en Italie et n'est plus le rabin de la communauté juive d'Alexandrie.

Cette notice est publiée par les bureaux des communautés du Caire et d'Alexandrie pour que les personnes envisageant de prendre part à la visite organisée par ce congrès sachent à quoi s'en tenir.
