the above picture, I found on the web..and can not now locate the source....if you know..please let me knowThis is an older picture..for you can not get this close to the geyser opening ... but there are benches .. many many benches..although in the busy summer months never enough room..*grin*this picture taken summer of 1997OLD FAITHFUL Ahh..how can I put in a page of things not to miss..and not add Old Faithful .. ... People are so silly...They come and say, ...'Old Faithful was so much MORE when I was young.....back in 1942 or 1966 or even in the 70's..'.... 'It was more tall..lasted longer..and always went off on the hour'...** The things we remember**...For things always look bigger when we were younger. And people who come now..and if Old Faithful does not go in their alloted time..they leave upset..and blame the park service for not being more accomodating... Each year my daughters have earned their Junior Ranger patch......The page for the geysers require them to time Old Faithful..and see how well their predictions, based on the previous eruptions, coincide with the ranger's predicitons. This at least requires people to be there for an hour. And if you are really lucky..you might be able to see one of my favorite geysers from this location........ and that is Beehive Geyser, which is nearby...But there is so much to do and see in the Upper Geyser Basin This is the hike I want to take next year....**lol**..well it is not really a hike at all.......just above the Upper Geyser Basin..overlooking the basin and Old Faithful..Wanting to take this hike in 1998..if achilles is up to it.... .. BEEHIVE GEYSER This geyser can be seen from Old Faithful..or you can take the short hike across the bridge up on geyser hill.....or there is even a short paved path that goes from the Hamilton Store near Old Faithful Inn..to a bench...(which is what eye did this past summer with my brace)....and watch this geyser...it is one of not only mine..but my children's favorite geysers.. My girls have gotten wet from the force of the water through the cone...the noise as it begins it's eruption - is wonderful..it looks like a firehose going off at full tilt...and the noise..can be heard all over ....**see Charles covering his ears** Sometimes we have waited for hours for it to play..this last visit it was on approx. 12 hour intervals..and we missed it ...**so sad**...but we have wonderful memories..and know that next year we WILL see it..as we plan more days at the basin..and longer days, too.. The steam/water that is coming out from the side..is Beehive Indicator..and usually if you see this begin..you know that Beehive is soon to play...Be sure to ask at the Ranger Station there at Old Faithful the schedul that Beehive is on..and how accurate the indicator is..... If you get a chance to see Beehive...I promise you will not be disappointed.... ... GRAND GEYSER This has to be up there with the favorite geysers on my list...It also is in Upper Geyser Basin..walking towards Morning Glory ..... We have waited for 5-6 hours to see this one play.. It is a fountain geyser..and you wait for the pool to fill..the pressure to build..and then when it erupts the entire pool of water rises..it is most wonderful..and worth every minutes spent waiting.. There is a small geyser indicator off to the left side of Grand called Vent...It must be playing when Grand goes...and it goes at 20 minute intervals....so it is a wonderful to watch..and wait for..then you know how to gauge your time... There are benches there to wait...and geysers all over that you can observe as you are waiting..but you have not seen geysers until you have wathced a fountain geyser play...It is much more impressive....and memorable... And if you are lucky...you will be rewarded with not only one burst....but up to 4 bursts....and each one glorious..... GREAT FOUNTAIN CASTLE GEYSER NORRIS GEYSER BASINAhh......remember the smell of sulphur.....a trade mark of many areas of the park WEST THUMB Here is just one of the many taken in this basin in the summer of 1997.....Emmalee is having fun, turning Big Cone..into Pig Cone..... What else is interesting..is the high water level when we visited in June....completely covered...and the water under the board walk also MIDWAY GEYSER BASIN Back to the Yellowstone page...
