After you subscribe, a listowner has to set you to be able
to post messages to the list. This generally takes a few hours to a day
depending on how often the listowners check their mail. You will get a message
saying that your subscription options have been updated.
and have the command in the
message field.
Your default subscription options are to receive messages as
they are posted. You can change this to receiving a daily digest of
messages by sending the message to the above address:
If you do not want to get birdband posting for a while (such
as a vacation) but you don’t want to unsubscribe, you can change your subscription
option to “nomail” with the command:
(You can also see recent BirdBand postings on the web, see
below under “Services” or on Jack Siler’s web site:
http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/BAND.html)
To start having messages sent to you again, send:
·
Set birdband digest (in the body of the mail –
no subject line), as appropriate
To unsubscribe, the command is:
·
Signoff birdband (in the body of the mail – no
subject line)
Address for posting to the forum after joining is: birdband@listserv.arizona.edu
When you post a message to birdband, you do not get a copy
of it or an acknowledgment.
You can change these options by the commands (in the body of
the mail – no subject line):
Subscribe/Unsubscribe on the web:
You can join and leave the birdband list and change your
subscription options at the web site below. It also contains searchable archive
for BirdBand. http://listserv.arizona.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=birdband
The most common posting problem is a change in the name of
your mail server. If this changes at all from the form in which you subscribed,
the birdband listserv will not recognize you as being subscribed and you can’t
post. (Usually, you continue to receive messages without any problems because
your mail server accepts messages to the old address form.) This happens most
often with mail servers at companies and universities as they upgrade their
systems and is not common with ISP’s. If you get a posting rejected, drop the
listowners a line and it is usually easy to fix the problem.

Attachments are not permitted in BirdBand postings. If you
have a document or an image, you can make it available to those who request it
or put it up on a web site and post the URL. If necessary, documents or images
can be put on this web site.
US and Canadian banders use a four letter code system
developed by the Bird Banding Lab in submitting data. (Ex. AMGO = American
Goldfinch) Many US and Canadian banders find these codes handy as a shorthand
way of referring to birds. However, these codes are not used outside North
America and mean nothing to BirdBand subscribers in other countries. We are
lucky to have so many banders from all over the world subscribed to this list.
Non-English speakers make the effort to post in English. The least we can do is
communicate clearly. At a minimum, please use the full English name of the bird
for your first reference to the species.
BIRDBAND has a special topic filtering system for the topic BONET. You may choose only to receive mail
addressed to BONET or all mail other than that addressed to BONET. On
subscribing TOPICS are set by default to ALL (all mail to the mailing list
including BONET)
Instructions for setting your own TOPICS options to be found on the TOPICS page.
