As with most bands, Southern Pacific had several members come and go within their 6+ year career. The original band members on their first album in 1985 were Tim Goodman (lead & background vocals, acoustic guitar, synthesizer), John McFee (lead & background vocals, electric & pedal steel guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin, dobro), Keith Knudsen (background vocals, drums & percussion), Jerry Scheff (background vocals, bass), and Glenn D. Hardin (background vocals, piano & synthesizer). Both John and Keith were former members of The Doobie Brothers.
Stu Cook, formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival, replaced Jerry on bass and vocals for the second album in 1986. Kurt Howell, who had toured with acts like Crystal Gayle, replaced Glenn on keyboards, as well as taking up some lead vocals.
Primary lead singer Tim Goodman left the group after the second album, and was replaced by David Jenkins. He left the band after the third album in 1989, leaving only John, Keith, Stu and Kurt on the fourth, and final, original studio album in 1990. A greatest hits package was released in 1991, and about this time the group disbanded.
Kurt formed a new group in the late 1990's called Burnin' Daylight.
