The Central Arizona Project

Overview and Case Study by David Mauro

The objective of this paper is to accomplish two things:  The first is to provide thorough background information in the form of a status report on the Central Arizona Project, its purpose, history and evolution. A general understanding of the area concerned, the dynamics of the project, and those whom are impacted will be provided. My second objective for this paper is to more carefully examine the effects of the Central Arizona Project. I will achieve this by conducting a case study involving two regions, both experiencing inverse resource related consequences from the Project. I will analyze the effects of the Project on cotton production, the state's largest cash crop and the major field crop in CAP districts, to determine whether or not the program has succeeded in its original goal of agricultural enhancement.
