Bruce Gordon, who has no e-mail address, found some nice nails on the Louisville, Henderson & St. Louis last month (August). He got several of those neat square raised/round shank nails from the 20's. In January he was pulling lots of L&N nails. He liv s in Kentucky, and he will host the next TDNCA show.

Hi: First of all, let me thank Jeff Oaks for his wealth of information. I am a newcommer to collecting nails but have collected bottles and insulators for years. I subscribe to a wonderful discussion list named Insulator Collectors Of the Net (ICON). It i heavily used to diseminate information about the Insulator hobby, I hope this forum can become as useful. As a beginner I have lots of questions. I would ask some here but don't know how much text this thing will accept. I'm sort of long winded. I will a preciate any e-mail contact with anyone wanting to correspond. Anyone want/need any P.G.& E. nails ? I've got a bunch of traders. I can use a few Santa Fe pents.

Answer to Joe Hawksworth's question: I haven't heard of any square date nails from these years. Answer to Steve in so az: The SP did not use any square nails. You are right in asuming they are really from the EP&SW, which was taken over by the SP in 1924. Answer to Jim Sisnley: No, the actual number of anchor marks does not matter. I have seen rnd I (07) 12's with as many as 12 anchors, and as few as four. There is one comment about this in my book, page 2 of Vol III under "variations". I should make t is more explicit!

Question: When attempting to identify nails by WESIS number, is it important what the EXACT number of barbs or gripper marks there are ? In other words, I find nails that have 7,8,9,10 horizontal lines but no other markings. They look very similar otherwi e and I do not find all those number of lines in the book and haven't run across the answer in either DNC or Jeff Oaks books. Have I missed something ?

I am under the impression that the SP RR had no square nails. I saw on ebay a guy that had 4 SP nails and 3 were round and the fourth was an 11 square. Isn't this probably an EPSW nail ? I've found several like this one on old EPSW lines. Correct me if I'm wrong. Steve in so az

Hello - I'm new to date nails but already have most of the SP set put together. A couple friends have helped me do so besides pulling some. I spent yesterday pulling nails along and off the highway. The further I got from a town the more I seemed to find. Is this normal ? I would appreciate any info that anyone can give me about finding and pulling them. I have been using a Wonder bar to pull them but some require a hammer. Is there a universal tool ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve in so az

I have been reading a lot of the comments about date nails with interest. First of all, some of you may not be aware that there is a club dedicated to the collecting of date nails. I believe it was formed in 1970. The Texas Date Nail Collector's Assoc ation. Don't let the name throw you, as it is open to anyone, anywhere interested in collecting date nails. Secondly, date nails were first used in France around 1870! The oldest known U.S. date nail is 1897 (Mississippi River & Bonne Terre Ry, and date nails are still being used by many utility companies in treated poles. I have many nails 1901 through 1998 o sell or trade. Email me for further information.

I found an Aqua blue Brookfield recently. It is something like a CD 101, and it has the company name and address embossed on one side of the "dome" and 3 dates embossed on the other, all of which list different dates in the year 1870. It has no chips in it. does anyone have any idea how much it might be worth? Thank you.
