Strangely enough, Tim's first appearance as a stand up comic was a dare! However, he was always willing to entertain during his time at Western Michigan University in 1975, where he got a degree in TV production, and then went to work as a creative director for a small advertising firm in Detroit Like many struggling actors, Tim did many comercials in his early years, ranging from cars to clothes. These never make your career, bu they kept Tim afloat during those early times in his career.

Very quickly after the start of Home improvement, it was shot to the top ten in the Nielson ratings. The public had excepted the transition from Tim's stand up act to television star. Soon after the ybegan to show their appreciation for his work. On the left Tim is pictured picking up his trophy at the Golden Globe Awards in 1994. On the right Tim hams it up at the 21st Annual People's Choice Awards at universall Studios, California. This was not the only People choice Award that Tim won. He won 8 more awards. Pretty good for the dirty Stand-up, turned clean family comic!

Tim ventured into writing with his first book, Don't Stand Too Close To A Naked Man (Hardcover: ISBN 0-7868-6134-7; Paperback: ISBN 0-7868-8902-0 both published by Hyperion)

A human book, an autobiography, a book that explains why men are different from women; and, guys, it's worth the cover price justfor the helpful hints on how to deal with the opposite sex(if she asks how she looks in an outfit, never mention her backside no matter what) Tim explores the mysteries of the sexes, while giving us real insight into his own life and the twists of fate that landed him both a prison term and the succesful comedy career that culminated in a triple crown of business : a #1 televison show, feature film, and best-selling book simultaneously. Here are a couple of quotes: -

"Everyone plays golf now, which is a lot like going to a strip club. You get all charged up, pay big money to hang out on a beautiful course, and start drinking early. Eighteen holes later you're plastered and frustrated and most of your balls are missing."

"Men look at women the way men look at cars. Everyone looks at Ferraris. Now and then we like a pickup truck, and we all end up with station wagons."

After its phenominal success has published a second titled I'm Not Really Here (ISBN 0-7868-6257-2 published by Hyperion). In his number one New York Times bestseller, don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man, Tim Allen regaled us with tales from the male-female front. Now, in i'm Not Really Here, he takes a look at men in midlife and their relationship to wives, children, friends the universe, God, and why it's so tough to get a good night's sleep. The book opens with Tim suddenly waking from a strange dream. He's been reading late into the night about today's hot scientific topic quantum physics and what he's learned about the nature of reality really disturbs him. Fortunately, he's got plenty of time to mull it over. Tim's wife and daughter are going away on a camping trip, and Tim is left at home with their dog, Spot. At first, he's excited at the opportunity to eat what he wants (bologna and potato chip sandwiches watch the sci-fi videos he loves, and finish the 1946 Ford he's been restoring so he can deliver it to a car show on Monday. Unfortunately, he can't find the final part: a one-ofa-kind hood ornament. He encounters Very strange coincidences, meets people he doesn't know who seem to know too much about him? and wonders if his life is half full or half empty. As he roams from room to room, Tim ponders how we wind up sounding like our parents when we raise our own children (Don't stir your ice cream into soup'), men's fascination with pricey gadgets (does this drill bit set really cost $89,000?), and how romantic "chemistry really works (It's all based on salts").

He describes his own rise to celebrity and what it was like to buy groceries without wearing a-mask. He explores the allure of hot cars, the temptation of fast-food chain prizes which seem to be getting bigger and bigger all the time (i'l'll have the happy meal and the Harley, please and his obsession with his place in the cosmos.

I'm Not Really Here deals, in the Toolman's inimitable way, with some of the urgent questions a man faces at midlife, from What is real?' to what should he eat for breakfast ('The gummy cinnamon buns or the cereal no one can pronounce? Moose lips. ("Mouse licks"). This book is a culmination of a five-year journey of self-discovery. It will surprise and challenge, make you wonder and think, and induce laughter on every page. Tim Allen has won six People's Choice Awards for his television show Home Improvement, and he was twice nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. His first feature filmed The Santa Clause, was a number one hit, and his first book, Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Mans was a number one bestseller. Tim will be starring in another made-in-Maryland film. Preproduction started in March on "For Richer or Poorer," with locations in Glen Burnie and northern Baltimore County. The plot: Yuppies in debt hide out among the Amish! I read that Main Street was shut down Monday and Tuesday (5/6th may) in the small town of Westminster, Md. to let Universal Studios film part of ``For Richer and Poorer.'' (a comedy about New Yorkers who ditch the big city and find new values wit the Amish). 2,000 people turned out to get a see Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley and the filmin'. The crowd went crazy when Tim Allen came out and signed autographs.

Tim, TV and film star -- and Beverly Hills resident -- on partial nudity in his next movie, "For Richer or Poorer," a romantic comedy filming this summer, quoted in Entertainment@Home magazine: My wife is always going, "You've got a great butt; you ought to show it in a movie.' I said, "You want to see me naked with another woman?' And she loved the script. So you'll get to see me naked. "It could be a sweet film, but maybe that's dangerous for me. There's not much in it for kids -- and I admit a lot of my fans are preteens. It's basically for the "When Harry Met Sally' crowd."

Tom Ridge, the Governor of Pennsylvania, visited the set of "For Richer or Poorer," on May 15. Portions of the movie are being filmed in Muddy Creeks Fork, York County. Ridge and the Pennsylvania Film Office worked closely with Universal Studios to promote Pennsylvania as a location for the film.

"It is invigorating to witness the diversity of economic potential in this great Commonwealth," Ridge said. "While this movie set is not a traditional economic development site, it represents new jobs and investment that we're reaching out to generate in Pennsylvania. There is no reason why we cannot successfully compete to secure film production business in Pennsylvania, particularly when that business brings spending and jobs to Pennsylvania."

Ridge met Allen, star of the television series "Home Improvement," last year when he traveled to Hollywood to promote Pennsylvania as a prime location for film and television productions. "For Richer or Poorer" has an Amish story line and has resulted in the purchase of Amish equipment and goods from the Lancaster region for use in the film.

On May 24, Tim was charged with drunken driving after police in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, stopped him for zooming his 1988 Ferrari at 70 miles per hour in a 40 miles-per-hour zone. His blood-alcohol level was 0.15, well over the 0.10 legal alcohol limit in his native Michigan For a more in depth article and information on his court hearing, read the article Tim Allen Arrested for DUI .

Still, the need for speed is not a new thing for Tim. He has always been a big fan of Motor Racing. He is an especially big fan of Indy Racing. Tim says:-

"It is great to be there, going so fast, all you care about is getting round that next corner, shoving on the gas, getting round the next corner. Nothing else really matters at that point"

Tim also proves that he's a real "car guy" with Tim Allen/Saleen RRRRacing, his very own racing team. He has taken part in many competitions over the last few years. After a recent racing accident, however, Tim admits he is now going for a little less racing power. He will still, however, continue to race.
