The Neighborhood The 'Burbs takes place in a fictional suburb called Hinkley Hills on a cul-de-sac named Mayfield Place. Mayfield Place is intended to show typical suburban life in the typical suburban neighborhood, and it does so by including all of the stereotypical characters in the movie. You have your "arms dealer," the "crazy person," the old man nobody likes, the normal family man, and the freaks that everyone suspects of wrongdoing. Therein lies the premise of the movie: how do each of these personalities interact in the suburban fishbowl. The layout of this cul-de-sac has Walter and Queenie living in the pristine house at the end of the circle with the various neighbors coming down either side of the street. The Klopeks live directly to the right of Walter (while facing Walter's house) and share a property line with him (so if they needed to borrow a cup of sugar, the could either ask Ray OR Walter). The next house on the right side of the road belongs to the Petersons followed by Art and Suzette Weingartner. Moving to the left from Walter's abode, we have the "mystery house." This mystery house apparently contains one or more hermits who never come out of their house because we never see anyone from that house during the entire duration of the movie. The next house belongs to the "War Machine" and Bonnie Rumsfield followed by the Butler household (that apparently needs painting). There is no actual Mayfield Place neighborhood even though it looks as though there is given the opening scene with the zoom-in on the Earth. This scene seems to place Mayfield Place somewhere in eastern Iowa and not near any overly large metropolitan areas. I believe that this is done on purpose to give the idea that this is a typical suburb and should not be associated with one particular city. In reality, Mayfield Place is at on the backlot at Universal Studios in California. The "neighborhood" is called Colonial Street, and houses can be moved in and out and around to create the needed look. On the lot, Colonial Street is not a cul-de-sac, so some modifications had to be made to put in the circle drive at the end of the street. Additionally, the Klopeks' house had to be wheeled in and get major renovations to the grounds around the house.
