TOMMY LEE JONES
THE POLO PLAYER
I am a major Tommy Lee Jones fan, but I am a fan of more than his acting ability. I am a horsewoman and I am quite interested in learning as much as possible about his polo horses, polo playing, and his raising of thoroughbreds. As I find out this info I will post it here, I have found that horse people love to learn what other horse people are up to and learn all they can in the process.
I checked out the web page that was mentioned in The Jones Gazette for the San Antonio Polo Club and sure enough Tommy Lee is on the roster for the Club. There is all kinds of great info there and as I find out more info I will continue to display it here.
The San Antonio Polo Club homepage is filled with great info. I want to extend my thanks to them for maintaining a great web site.
THE GAME OF POLO
I have learned that the game is divided into 6 "chukkars" and each chukkar is 8 minutes long. A player uses a different horse for each chukkar, so each player has to be able to work with 6 different horses and get each to do all those things mentioned in the above paragraph in one game!! I must say that I have a LOT of respect for these polo players. For those of us who own and ride horses can you imagine not only attempting to get your horse to respond to your cues when and how you want but at the same time paying attention to all the other horses who are at a full gallop and also trying to hit a small ball towards your team mates!!! I personally can't imagine how they do it. Tommy Lee did an interview with the magazine "W" in May and it was a very good interview. One of the comments he made was that some of his best friends were involved in horses and that his polo family rarely spent time talking about business or private family matters. He spoke about being able to be himself and relax with his friends. That is one of the many things that I enjoy about my group of "horse" friends. There is so much to talk about in relation to the horses, whether it is discussing tack, food, pasture management, or tips on how to solve a particular problem that you can totally forget all about your day and/or your problems. Plus you know that if you need a friend to talk to you can trust them. I imagine that must be even more important for Tommy Lee since he is a star and everyone is looking for an angle or a way to get to him. I have only been in the horse world for about 3 years and I was very pleasantly surprised at how friendly and supportive everyone is. I can relate to Tommy Lee's statement. ---------------------------------------------------
