A Tribute to one of the greatest films...

     THE BEASTMASTER

/user/beastmaster0.jpg

Absolutely one of my most loved films.  This lesser-known classic was the film that prompted me to run around the house in my underwear telling people therein that I was no longer going by the name my parents gave me...but "Dar."  Silly,eh?  Well, give me some slack; I was only seven.  And please don't base the film on its' successor films: Beastmaster 2 & 3.  The glory lies in the Original.  To my love and childhood facination for this film~I pay homage.  So, to all my friends who stopped by...enjoy the rest of the page.                           Oi, Solidarity and Love,

THE BEASTMASTER~ A short summary

/user/heiroglyph.gif

The setting of this epic tale (based on the novel by Andre Norton), takes place in the city of Arrok.  King Zed orders the exile of the High Priest Maax(Rip Torn). It has long been the prophecy (seen by Maax's witchwomen) that Zed's son would slay Maax. Defying this "false prophecy" Maax sends his henchwoman out to nab Zed's unborn son;  brand him with the sign of Ar and sacrefice him.  Luckily, a traveling villageman (Ben Hammer) rescued Dar before he was to be sacficed.  He then takes Dar in as his own son.  Twenty some years later, Maax and the barbarian Jun Horde destroy and raze the village of Imor (everyone is killed, even his adoptive family).  Dar is the only one who survives the onslaught, largely because his dog, Koto, pulled him to safety.  After putting a torch to the dead Imorites...Dar sets out for revenge against the Juns.

On his journey, Dar stumbles on a couple of mischevious ferrets who accidently launch him into a pit of quicksand. After they help him escape Dar gives them fitting names; Koto and Poto.  Soon afterwards, he rescues a panther (actually a spray-painted tiger) from four Jun soldiers.  The panther he names Rrrrr.
With the hawk, he has his eyes...with the ferrets, he has his cunning....and now with the panther, he has strength.

Note from the Narrator:  I will not spoil the rest of the movie for you, because I want you to experience all the splendor that is The Beastmaster for yourselves.  I will tell you this though! It has all the makings of an action/fantasy classic.  It has an epic hero in "Dar",  supernatural powers (not magic), a beautiful heroin (Tanya Roberts), gorgeous and realistic landscapes (filmed on location in Mexico), cute animal comrades, imaginative and realistic barbarians (speaking mainly of the Jun Horde), and some impressive fight scenes.  And if you are still not impressed and would like to know a bit more about the movie check out this website.  The Beastmaster Files
