Title: WAR OF THE ROSES, THE
Year: 1989
Genre: Comedy
Director: Danny DeVito
The players: Michael Douglas
Kathleen Turner
Danny DeVito
Marianne Sägebrecht
Sean Astin
About the film: Douglas and Turner are reteamed in this black comedy that goes from funny to bizarre. DeVito plays a marital advisor who tells the story about Douglas and Turner as a deterrent example to one of his clients. Their relationship starts out alright but pretty soon she doesn’t love him anymore and wants him out of the house, the house that he has payed for. No way. He will stay, that’s when they start a war against each other, and they will stop at nothing. Don’t wait for the happy ending… Fine performances from the leads.

Title: WATERLOO BRIDGE
Year: 1940
Genre: Romantic drama
Director: Mervyn LeRoy
The players: Vivien Leigh
Robert Taylor
Virginia Field
Maria Ouspenskaya
C. Aubrey Smith
About the film: After Leigh’s flawless performance in Gone with the wind many doubted that she could play anyone but Scarlett. She didn’t get the part for Rebecca opposite her husband Laurence Olivier and so had to work on Waterloo bridge instead. However she managed to prove the doubters wrong. Both Taylor and Leigh named this the personal favourite picture of their respective careers which really says a lot. Their acting make this picture something far out of the ordinary. Myra Lester, a poor ballet-dancer, meets captain Roy Cronin on Waterloo bridge during a German airraid. They immediately like each other but he has to go to war and dismised from the theatre she has to earn her living somehow. A very sad and touching film. Beautiful score.

Title: WAY WE WERE, THE
Year: 1973
Genre: Romantic drama
Director: Sydney Pollack
The players: Barbra Streisand
Robert Redford
Bradford Dillman
Murray Hamilton
Viveca Lindfors
About the film: With films like this Redford became one of the most popular actors of the 70’s. It’s a beautiful love story focusing on Streisand’s and Redford’s relationship spinning over some fifteen years. Nice music, sung by Barbra.

Year: 1991
Genre: Comedy
Director: Neil Jordan
The players: Robert De Niro
Sean Penn

Title: WEST SIDE STORY
Year: 1961
Genre: Musical
Director: Robert Wise
Jerome Robbins
The players: Natalie Wood
Richard Beymer
George Chakiris
Rita Moreno
Russ Tumblyn
About the film: Tony and Maria belong to different gangs in N.Y. which makes their love impossible. They try to stop the fighting but the hatred is too strong. Very nice Leonard Bernstein-songs including "Tonight", "Maria", "America" and "Somewhere there’s a place for us". Wood’s singing is dubbed. The tragic story and wooden execution has little in common with the good-natured and innocent musicals of the 40’s and 50’s. The film was a huge hit at the oscars grabbing ten statuettes.

Title: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY…
Year: 1989
Genre: Comedy
Director: Rob Reiner
The players: Billy Crystal
Meg Ryan
Carrie Fisher
Bruno Kirby
Steven Ford
About the film: Harry is a young man without any scruples who meets well brought-up Sally. They travel together from N.Y. to Chicago. Their opinions differ about everything but they still seem to be just right for each other. Ryan and Crystal work so well together, their chemistry is perfect. Very funny and witty.

Title: WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART
Year: 1990
Genre: Drama
Director: Clint Eastwood
The players: Clint Eastwood
Jeff Fahey
George Dzundza
Alun Armstrong
Marisa Berenson
About the film: The film is based on Paul Duncan and Kay Viertel’s novel about the legendary filming of The African queen which took place on location in Africa’s jungles. Eastwod plays director John Huston who, according to this film, was more interested in shooting an elephant than directing the movie. That’s what this film is about, how Huston drives everyone crazy with his irresponsible and egoistic behaviour. The film would have been more interesting if it had described more of how the film was made, not just that Huston went hunting all the time. Why aren’t the real names of those involved used? John Huston is called John Wilson, the Bogarts are called the Duncan’s and Katharine Hepburn just Kay.

Title: WHITE PALACE
Year: 1990
Genre: Drama
Director: Luis Mandoki
The players: James Spader
Susan Sarandon
Jason Alexander
Kathy Bates
Eileen Brennan
About the film: Spader plays a yuppie who meets Sarandon in a bar. He likes her but she’s older and doesn’t fit in his circle of acquaintances. He has to choose between her and his upper-class friends, that’s all this film is about. Spader is good in this type of roles. His characters in Bad influence, Pretty in pink and Wolf all remind of this one.

Title: WHY ME?
Year: 1989
Genre: Comedy
Director: Gene Quintano
The players: Christopher Lambert
Kim Greist
Michael J Pollard
Christopher Lloyd
J.T. Walsh
About the film: Why Christopher Lambert? To build a fast paced comedy around him is a very bad decision. Anyway, the story is about a man who gets his hands on a diamond ring that the police, KGB and others also want. One maniac threatens to kill her own family if she doesn’t get the ring, well if you think jokes like that are funny this one’s for you.

Title: WILD AT HEART
Year: 1990
Genre: Drama
Director: David Lynch
The players: Nicolas Cage
Laura Dern
Diane Ladd
Willem Dafoe
Isabella Rossellini
About the film: Powerful melodrama with an intense Cage in the leading role and some nasty scenes in true Lynch-spirit. The movie is wild and crazy but never gets out of hand and the end is beautiful.

Title: WILD BUNCH, THE
Year: 1969
Genre: Western
Director: Sam Peckinpah
The players: William Holden
Ernest Borgnine
Robert Ryan
Edmond O’Brien
Warren Oates
About the film: Widely considered to be Peckinpah’s finest work. A bunch of old gunfighters get together for one last robbery. This film has aged a great deal because the action genre has improved very much since the 60’s. What was then exciting shooting-sequences seem rather weak today. Moreover the film has some very slow parts. Flawless performances from a strong cast don’t entirely make up for this.

Title: WILDCATS
Year: 1986
Genre: Comedy
Director: Michael Ritchie
The players: Goldie Hawn
Swoosie Kurtz
Robyn Lively
Wesley Snipes
Woody Harrelson
About the film: Light little amusing comedy where Hawn plays a teacher who wants to be a football coach. She knows all about the game, but no one thinks he’s suitable because she’s a woman. At last she gets to coach an undisciplined team. Of course she defies the odds and make them not only listen to her but also win the games. Predictable, yet entertaining it’s the typical sports film story; new coach takes over bad team and after difficult time turns things around. Hawn plays the same type of character as in most of her comedies.

Title: WOMAN IN RED, THE
Year: 1984
Genre: Comedy
Director: Gene Wilder
The players: Gene Wilder
Kelly LeBrock
Gilda Radner
Charles Grodin
Joseph Bologna
About the film: Wilder plays a happily married man who falls madly in love with a beautiful woman. He struggles to get close to her for most of the movie and when he finally succeeds he asks himself what he’s doing. Stevie Wonders oscar-winning music is the only enjoyable thing this film has to offer.

Title: WRONG MAN, THE
Year: 1993
Genre: Drama
Director: Jim McBride
The players: Rosanna Arquette
Kevin Anderson
John Lithgow
Jorge Cervera Jr.
Ernesto Laguardia
About the film: Kevin Anderson is one of the gloomiest and least worth seeing actors in Hollywood. Here he plays a man wrongfully accused for murder. And believe it or not but when he seeks help he receives it from the real murderer, played by Lithgow. As if things weren’t already problematic Andersson is physically attracted to Lithgows girlfriend Missy, played by Arquette in an exposed part. Could be good but the film loses intensity quickly. The police officers are almost invisible for the whole film and Anderson’s acting is primitive. He just whispers his lines slowly and hopes to get away with it.
