AMC CONCORD

1978 - 1983

The AMC Concord was one of the best cars on the market during the automotive "dark ages" of the late 1970s and early '80s. It offered a lot of vehicle for the money. Interiors were luxurious, comfortable and used high quality materials. The dash treatment was especially nice, with very real-looking woodtone trim and pleasant design.

Styling was good for the period, in spite of the fact that the basic body shell dated back to the 1970 model year (when it was introduced as the Hornet model, which lasted through 1977).

Most Concords were powered by AMC's fine 258 cubic inch (4.2L) in-line six, which was an amazingly durable and torquey engine that allowed one to stay with the traffic flow with a minimum of fuss. Most Concords also featured the rugged Chrysler-built "Torque Command" automatic transmission, which shifted smoothly and precisely over the long life of the car.

For a number of model years, the Concord was the one of the very few domestic cars that I would have considered buying. I've always admired this car for its combination of nice styling, interior comfort, and rock-solid drivetrain (when equipped with the AMC in-line six engine, anyway).
