Basic-Fort Knox Armor Training Center B company-13th bat.-4th training brg.

High School 1969 September 1969 - My first time away from home. With just Graduating from Southwestern High School Flint MI. I rushed out and signed up for the army.The only contact I ever had with the military was in the movies (John Wayne's Green Berets),and watching the 6 o'clock news.I was ready.My father went so it was my turn to go.The recruter seen me coming.I signed up for Germany and armor traing thinking I will stay out of Vietnam. Not knowing that is where I was to end up. My military training started at Fort Knox for Basic Training.Some of the guys I went down with stayed together through Basic. It was hard and long training.We were getting prepared for war,but had fun doing it.A far as we knew,Vietnam was thousands of miles away.Finaly graduation.We were getting ready for our AIT. Many of us choose other types of advanced training.Myself and a few others decided to stay and go into armor training. Tanks and APC'S. So off to AIT we went.16 more weeks of long and hard training.Soon our training was over and graduation was upon us once again.Some of us were headed for other destenations around the world.And most of us were headed to Vietnam. Now the war was looking more real to us.
