Our Labor Day Vacation in Central Oregon

There are so many interesting things to see in this area, and this is only the third part of the first day!

We next stopped at Peter Steine Ogden State Park, which wasn't even there the last time I was in this area.  It has been built to the west side of the Crooked River Bridge, which is an engineering marvel for starters, and add the fact that they built a new bridge over the Gorge in the past few years, makes it really awesome.  They left the old bridge, which is closer in the picture, and you can walk out on it.  Fat chance of me doing that!  I had enough trouble just edging up to the rock walls to take the pictures!

This is still the Crooked River, but it has eaten down a lot deeper here than it had at Smith Rock.  This is really deep and scary, about 300 feet deep.  Last time I was here, it was just a parking lot, no walls, and everyone who drove in had to toss a rock (if you could find one) over the edge to see how long it took to hit the bottom.  Thank goodness that was stopped, because over time it would be filled up.  They have created a beautiful park, here in the high desert, where there is nothing else but sagebrush, jackrabbits and pine trees.  The grass is green and lush, which you don't expect to see in this type of terrain.

The Crooked River Gorge has some grisly stuff in the fairly recent past.  This is where Janece Freeman threw two little kids over the edge.  Sick woman, thank goodness she is still behind bars.

I believe the train trestle may be older than the highway bridge, but I don't really know for sure.  We spent about half an hour here, then headed off to our next destination.
