JULY 10,1902
  Justice L.Best late Postmaster at Best,Crenshaw County appeared
yesterday at the bar of the United States District Court and pleaded
guilty of trading in Unite States postage stamps.Best was given a
#30.00 fine and sentenced was suspended until the Nov.term of the
court.

AUGUST 07,1902
   In a base ball game at Honoraville last Friday.Mr Pleas Roper was
struck on the head by a ball and received serious injuries.For a while
they thought he was dead.

SEPTEMBER 11,1902
   Nels Mahone,colored,of Beat 6 was beat by two other Negroes last
week and received painful wounds.

SEPTEMBER 18,1902
   The Jury in the case of Wesley Rogers returned a verdict of guilty
as charged in the indictment.

   Brantley Bridge across the Conecuh river has been completed.It is
1600 feet long.
				------
   J.S.Knot who resides in Beat 12 was jailed Saturday.He is charged
with assaulting his own daughter.The child is only about 13 years of
age.The indictment was found by the Grand Jury that is in session.
				------
   One night last week some parties were stealing cotton from Mr.Ike
Parks and from the tracks of blood found the next morning,it is evid-
ent that Mr.Parks Winchester did some damage.
				------
Rutledge was torn up Saturday night by a crowd of hoodlums.They de-
stroyed well curbings and filled wells with trash,boxes,etc.The Rut-
ledge guardhouse was broken open and furniture wrecked.

OCTOBER 23,1902
   A man named cooper,who resides in Butler County,was caught in a gin
belt and cut to pieces last Friday.He was a grandson of a Rev.M.Cooper
who was well known in Crenshaw.The gin where the accident occurred is
located between Oaky Streak and Van Pelt.

OCTOBER 30,1902
   Centenary Church near Honoraville Sunday,Mr Henry Crowell and Miss
Tula Pollard were united in wedlock.

   I'll give you an account of a shooting that occurred last Sunday in
Vidette on the place of Mr.T.B.King.A Negro named Julius Ford shot
another Negro and dangerously.Julius Ford quit his wife and she secur-
ing a divorce,married this other Negro,and while on his way to church
was hailed by Ford and without saying anything else,commenced firing
on him.He fired 5 times,3 balls taking effect,one in the arm,one in
the hip,and the other in his breast,just below the heart.Mr.King lives
about 2 miles North West of Glenwood.Ford was at large when last heard
from.

   Mr.E.G.Williams of Beat 7 is now representing E.E.Forbes Piano
Company in this County.

   Saturday evening at Joquin,two children of Mr.Al.Thompson,were
playing with a pistol and a girl about 9 years old was seriously shot,
and the accidental discharged of the weapon in the hands of her little
brother.

   Clark Heath,escaped convict from Georgia is boarding at the Sheriff
May's Hotel.

   From Cookstand,syrup making is the order of the day here now,If rum
is as short according as sugar cane in this section.the fiery stuff

JANUARY 01,1903
   Mrs.O.C.Walker received from her brother in Texas a tinned sheep
skin sofa cover,with the bust of an Indian chief burned on it.It is an
excellent present.its a beauty and something rare.

   It appears that we well have a dry town the ensuing year,as our bar
keeper in Dozier,Mr.G.B.Dozier does not seem to want to sell tangle
foot again.He says it does not pay and besides he is a ear behind on
his fishing.

   Miss Nellie Kendrick received a very serious hurt last week.She was
kicked in the face by a colt that belongs to Mr.Morrison.

   At Opp,during the Christmas festivities,town Marshall Turner shot
and killed a Negro.Mr.Turner was formerly a citizen of Crenshaw County
and is a brother of Mr.John W.Turner of Honoraville.

JANUARY 15,1903
   Mr.Robert Harbin came near being killed last Thursday morning.He
was in the woods cutting,as a tree fell a limb flew back striking him
on top of the head,cutting an ugly gash.

   Last week George Cook,son of Joe Cook,of Beat 1 shot a hole through
his foot with a shot gun.

   John Ginwright was accidentally cut with an axe last Monday chopp-
ing wood,while uplifted the axe flew from the handle,the edge striking
John on the head,he is getting along all right.

   Prof.Haynes of Dozier preached at the Court House Saturday night
and Sunday morning.

in his head about  inches long.

   Mr.Shorter McDougald of Beat 10 showed the Critic newspaper a hen
egg that was shaped like a figure 8.

   Breaking a Mustang on the streets of Luverne by a colored preacher
last Tuesday offered no little amusement for the boys.

   An Oyster supper under the auspices of the ladies Aid Society,will
be given at the home of Mrs.S.W.Webster in Lapine on the evening of
Friday March 6 for benefit of the church and parsonage funds.

   Aunt Eliza Huffman aged 102 years old was before the commissioners
court asking for assistance.

   Mr.Pete Edwards and Dr.Felix Tankersley left Sunday morning for

insane.

   Mr.William Welch of Patsburg has discovered his father-in-law has
been absent for 18 years.He was supposed to have been dead for eleven
years.His name is G.W.Moye and is 94 years of age.

   At the singing at Gravel Hill last Sunday,Mayor Jones was jumped on
 by two men,who beat him with knucks and cut him-Claude Stephens who
tired to separate them,was cut on the thigh.

   There was an all day Sacred Harp singing at the Christian Church
last Sunday in Best,l.at an early hour the wagons and buggies begin to
roll in and by 10:00 a large crowd had assembled the class was prompt-
ly formed and led by R.J.A.Stringer.

   Mr.W.L.Coker of Honoraville won a prize at the fiddlers convention
recently held in Greenville.

   Wesley Rogers of Crenshaw County was convicted of assault & murder
in the fall term of the Circuit Court and sentenced to 3 years impris-
onment.C.R.Bricken recommended the pardon.Stating that his doubt's of
the man's guilt were serious.

   The small pox is getting pretty close by for the says that it is in

   R.H.Stallings of Honoraville,Crenshaw County was in the Troy comm-
unity today,this is the first time he ever visited Troy,having lived
since 1859 within 31 miles of us.Mr.Stallings settled in 1899,where
he now lives,then as Butler Co.,since Crenshaw.

   A little boy of Mrs.John Barrington of Dozier was badly burned Fri-
day evening,but is doing very well at present.

   Miss Jennie Boan,daughter of Mr.J.C.Boan of Beat 1 was accidentally
shot through the thigh Thursday evening.She was visiting in the neigh-
borhood and some children were playing with a pistol,when it went off

   J.H.Marler and J.M.Sexton drove into the gully beyond Jon Trainum,
killed a horse,wrecked a buggy and seriously injured the two gentleman.

   John McLendon says somebody was black-balled by the Masonry of
Crenshaw County,McLendon not being a Mason,Its a reflection on Masonry

   Mr.Walter Tatum has resigned the position of town Marshall and Mr.
Will Parks has been appointed to fill the vacancy.

   On Friday evening T.J.Welch had better luck,he cut 2 trees and got
as much honey as e  and several of his friends could eat and carried
home a bucket full.

   Mr.J.H.M.Tucker was robbed of $35.00.The robbery took place between
the 9th and 18th of April.The thieves took the money from a trunk in
Mr.Tucker's house.

 the 13th child.The aged couple being 53 and 43 years from Effort,Ala.

   Mrs.Fannie Cornett who has been ill for some time is now improving.

   Mr.William Stringer and Miss Blanche Bozeman were married at the
home of the bride's fathers residence in Gravel Hill at 3 o'clock
Sunday June 26,Rev.T.E.Morgan affiliating.The ceremony was witnessed
by a large concourse of friends and relatives.

JULY 21,1904
   Last Friday morning at Brantley,Frank Langley was shot by Mrs.J.L.
Bryan.It was only a short time since Langley was severely cut by the
husband of the lady who did the shooting.Slanderous statements are
said to be at the bottom of the affair.Mrs Bryan was arraigned before
Judge Walker on Tuesday.The preliminary trail is set fro July 22.The
bond was fixed at 500.00,Langley is in a critical condition.

   On last Saturday a difficulty arose between Mr.Will Dean & Herbert
Rogers,living in Beat 6 in which Rogers shot Dean with a pistol in the
left breast the ball ranging downward.The two men are brother-in-law
and the trouble originated over a family matter.

   A difficulty occurred last Saturday in Rutledge between Mr.Yancy
Thaggard and Mr.Walter Sikes in which the former was cut by the latter
in several places but not o a serious nature.

   A shooting scrape occurred in Rutledge Saturday in which Virgil
Walker shot Judge Thaggard,a son of Mr.R.K.Thaggard.The wound is not
fatal but young Thaggard may lose one eye.

   Sheriff May carried Mr.Preston Byran Sr. to Tuscaloosa Wednesday.Mr
Bryan is  years of age and resides in Beat 15,during an insane rage on
Tuesday he stabbed his son Preston Byran Jr.

DECEMBER 22,1904
   A very destructive fire occurred at Highland Home last Saturday
night in which the boarding department of the College which was Mr.Sam
Jordan's residence,burned together with he barn and all out houses.In
this fire Mr.Jordan lost 5 horses,10 head of Jersey cow,1000 bushel of
corn and several ton of hay.The whole property destroyed was estimated
to be worth 10,000.00 on which there was a policy for $1,800.00 .All
of the boarder and the baggage were safely taking from the room and no
one was hurt.

   Mrs.Margaret RICHBURG is a Mother of the Confederacy.She was 81
   years of age on the 2th of June.Her son,Charner F.Clements,was en-
   listed in 1862.He lives in Crenshaw County,being 59 years of age.
   Mrs.Richburg was born in Sumter district,S.C.in 1824.Her father was
   a soldier in the Indian War and her grandfather was a soldier in
   the Revolutionary War.She had five brothers in the war between the
   States ,one of whom survived.

   Mr.William Warner of Lapine shot Mr.W.L.Grissett the clever depot
agent at Lapine on last Saturday evening.The trouble was caused over a
case of whiskey which Warner had ordered sent in a Negro's name.Warner
father found it out and had the Negro go in and sign for the whiskey
to prevent hi on from using it,Warner's son then thinking that Griss-
ett had notified his father about the whiskey armed himself with a
pistol and axe and walked in to the railroad office,where Grissett was
working and told Grissett that he had come to kill him.He fired four
shots at Grissett from a 38 caliber pistol and all struck him except
one.

   Henry Tremont, a one armed white man was arrested Tuesday.He is
charged with  burglarizing Sport's store and Bentley's commissary at
Theba. In his possession was found various skeleton keys that are
usually considered the tools of profession at burglaries.
