Captain Fife served in the Revolutionary War. In May, 1782,
he led a company of frontiersmen in Col. William Crawford's punitive
expedition against the Indians on the Sandusky River, which had a
disastrous ending. While returning he found a white child alone in
the woods, brought her home and adopted her.

Captain's Fife's son, William, later was commissioned a lieutenant
and was early trustee and elder of Bethel Church. Andrew Hood was
afterward commissioned a Captain.
During the Whiskey Insurrection, Captain Fife was loyal to the
Government. He was engaged in transporting whiskey and salt over
the mountains and kept his men so engaged that they took no part in
the affair.
William Fife,Sr. passed away in 1799 and was burried in
Bethel Cemetary, St.Clair, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Note: There are descendants of John Fife,Sr.; especially those
of William Fife, one of John's sons, that say their William was
the Captain. At this time, there were several Williams in our
Fife Family. My notes are based on a phamplet that the Bethel
Presbyterian Church sent to me.
