National Poultry Improvement Plan

We maintain 2 small backyard flocks of Belgian Bearded d'Uccles. Our Flocks produces mille fleur, blue mille fleur and golden neck. Our original stock came from Paul Kuhl. Every spring I get between one to two dozen e mails asking to buy adults. I am not a hatchery, I am a breeder. I don't have any extras in the spring. Any that I have kept through the winter I plan on using for breeding. And I don't keep that many. I can only keep between 25 to 30 over the winter. My coop has four walls limiting the number that can stay comfortably in it. I also get request to buy chicks. Again I don't have any extras running around. If I hatch 50, something happened and I got carried away. I generally only hatch between 15 to 25. Then I shut everything down. Spring is not the time to start a breeding program with chickens, if you plan on breeding for showing. If you just want pets, then for about $80.00 you can get some chicks from a hatchery. Strombergs (http://www.strombergschickens.com/ ) and Murray McMurray ( http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/ ) come to mind however there are others out there. Most breeders of show stock generally will get rid of their extras in late summer or early fall when we start cutting back our numbers for winter. We are all limited in the number than we can keep because of space. This is the time to buy from a breeder. We are members of NORTHERN NEW YORK POULTRY FANCIERS.
