Quaker Ancestry, Southern States

Although most of us associate Quakers with Pennsylvania and the northern states there was a sizable southern Quaker migration to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia which began in the mid-1700's. The story of Joseph Maddock's moves to North Carolina and his part in the foundation of the Quaker colony at Wrightsboro is told by Maddock descendant Ralph Hayes in Quaker Migrations. For the benefit of those whose ancestors were part of the short-lived Quaker community at Wrightsboro, near present day Thomson, Georgia, I have set up a Wrightsborough page. The idea is to have a unified source, similar to the county pages at Rootsweb, for descendants of people who were associated with the Monthly Meeting there. A number of other people have independently been doing the same thing for other Quaker Monthly Meetings. Those in the South you will find on this page. I have tried to collect those in other parts of the US on the following page: Quaker Resources for other States. If your ancestors are associated with a particular monthly meeting I urge you to consider setting up a web page for that meeting. There are a number of places where you can get a free web page, and I will be glad to help coach you through learning how to set it up-- just write me at sshaw@his.com
