My Grandpa (Ervin Cary), just loved to get Christmas Eve and Christmas
Gift on everybody he met on those two days. Since he lived with David Crockett
(Old Man Dave), Altom from when he was 11 until he married my Grandma and
established his own family, and since folks tend to do and say the things
in adulthood that they learned in childhood, I can only guess, but it's a
pretty good guess, that Old Man Dave loved to get Christmas Gift on everybody
he ran across too. Therefore, to Linda, and all others who are dedicated
to the research of their Altom roots, I say CHRISTMAS GIFT! I hope everyone
has a great holiday season and 1999 contains many wonderful things for you.

My grandpa, Daniel Pless "Hez" Aultom, always had a great time with "Christmas Gift". He is the only person, until now, that I have known who did this. This then is truly an Aultom, Altum,
Aulton, or Alton (all of these spellins are used by the children of "Hez") legacy. These little ties bind us all together.
Merry Christmas to All!

Iknow that Christmas (Eve) Gift and Christmas Gift has been a long standing
tradition in our line of Altom's Herscel S. Altom, Henry Sanders Altom and
John Andrew J. Altom. Its really interesting that the rest of the Altoms
are carrying it on. Merry Christmas from Ron and Sharon Altom

Hi everyone,
Ihave something of interest Ibelieve needs to be stated if we ever are going to go any further back on our family line. I'm not going to worry whether our name is Altom, Altum, Haltom,or Altham or any other surname you want to put there. It seems that no matter what direction we start out and end up we always go through Montgomery County North Carolina. While researching another family line Iknow that Idescend from a person named Ezekial but depending on what record you look at on him or any of his children his last name is either Cochran,Cockran or Cothran but still the same people named. To me it seems in our family in the same general area we have the same first names but a different spelling of the last names but they to me are all the same people as in the case of Ezekial Cochran /Cothran. The Montgomery County North Carolina Haltoms and Altoms are the same people but which spelling is right Idon't know or care as long we have the right people. First let me deal with one of the oldest in that County which is William. William is first found in any records in the Moravian papers listed as Altem and Haltom and had land in 1753 in what is now Stokes County. He later went to Anson and now Montgomery County and had land there in 1758. He is listed on the tax list in 1763 along with a John. This John bought land in 1771 as Haltom but sold it as Altom. One more reference Ineed to make is Spencer Haltom and Altom. The Spencer on the tax list in 1782 and the on e on the 1790 census is the same Spencer just minus the H. Ijust haven't decided for sure if there was two Spencers in the County around 1785, one being son of William and the other John. For the most part though all the time you see the name Spencer Haltom/Altom it is speaking of the same one. It seems also that all the lines whether Haltom or Alom and its other variations have a Spencer in it. The oldest Spencer I can find is the Spencer the son of John and Ann Latham Haltom. In the 1790 census he is listed as Altham but in 1800 he is Haltom. I honestly believe that all the Spencers we know of is named after this one and some kind of uncle of the others. Iguess by now you have gathered I believe that we all descend from John and Ann of 1761 Will well I do. You can spell or put whatever last name you want to behind John and Ann but it seems that they are our common ancestors wheter we are Altom, Altum or Haltoms and that two of his sons went to North Carolina before his will was made namely John and William. John is the ancestor of the Hawkins, Anderson Greene and Illinois bunch and along with the Greenville County South Carolina Clan. William is the Ancestors of the Haltoms of Montgomery County North Carolina, Owens County Indiana( and on some of their records they are listed as Altem and Altom) and the Newberry County South Carolina Altoms. I'll close by giving the line from the first Iknow of and let you put whatever last name you desire to put there and whichever you choose won't change the family structure but will satisfy the mind.
1.John and Mary had:John,William,Joseph,Charles, Nicholas, James ,Mary who married Edward Reynolds and Catherine who I believe married Jame Reddus
2.John and Ann had:John,William,Joseph,Spencer,Ann and Mary who married a Mills
3a.John and Mary had:John married Rachel,William the father of the Hawkins County and Illinois Altoms and James married Sarah Spurling possible others
3b.William and wife had:Spencer married Nancy West,William married Mary,Joseph married Mary Randall and James who married Phebe.
I'm not saying that I'm right on this but it sure seems that it points
in that direction when you take away the variations of the last name and
just go with the first names. Like Isaid you can put whatever name you want
to put behind them. Because it seems that on some record or other they used
all the different variations for whatever reason. I leave the last name your
choice. Iencourage feed back on this and if Ihave missed the mark somewhere
let know that for sure so Ican go back and see where Iwas wrong because Iwant
to get this right and not to mislead anyone. Darren Altom

The original were read at the NC Archives in Raleigh, NC. They were in

could be read. It is obvious to me that they are incomplete. The archives
will not allow this material to be copied due to its poor state.

I would like to add my support to Darren's comments with the following new finds:
1. In Abstracts of the Deeds of Rowan co NC 1753 to 1785 Vol 1-10 by Jo White Linn is the following very important find:
Vol 6 pg 167. 7 Jun 1763 Wm HOLTHAM of ANSON co to Hugh Dennum for 40 pounds VA money, 510 acres on Dan River. Witnesses include Samuel Waggener, and James Hampton. Prvd July Court 1765.
This was granted on Mar 13 1755, Granville to Wm HALTHAM 510 A on both sides of the Dan River. Rowan deed bk 3 pg 330. There are two other grants listed bk 3 pg 332 and bk 3 pg 334 for 266 and 640 a on Town fork creek.
The implications of this is that Wm Holtham is selling his land grant out and had already removed to Anson co NC. It is a Rowan co NC deed because at this early date Rowan include this land. There can be NO DOUBT that the moravian diary WM and the Wm of Rowan co and the Wm of Anson co NC are indeed ONE and the SAME PERSON.
Also to add on: there was a odd refer to Wm Altom in the Minute book of Rowan co NC. something about serving in the room of. A study of this refers to the constable (sheriff) appointed for various areas or territory much like what we see as folks working on county roads.
What is interesting is that there were further listing of Wm serving and others serving in his place as ALTOM, HOLTOM, etc. We did not catch the Haltom spelling until I went back and looked it up.
One comment about the Spencers. I support the two Spencers. There is a Spencer and wife Ann and also a Spencer and wife Nancy. I did quite a lot of research on Spencer and Ann Altum of Montgomery co NC selling land in Surry co NC. It is apparent to me that probably Spencer and Ann Altum never lived on the piece of property in Surry. Surry co NC and Rowan have excellant records. Also they have published tax records. Spencer and Ann never show up on any other Surry co NC records. Also a study of Lash family / Leash reveals they were moravian but greatly involved in land speculation. There is even a reference to them showing this piece of land in the moravian diary to another man. The old man Lash was officier (treasury) in moravian church. He went back and forth to PA. The implication to me is that Spencer and Ann Altum are now definitely place as living in NC until the sell of this property in Surry co.
I have reviewed the originals of the 1784-87 Montgomery co NC state census:
I did not find the numbers on the original as the same as what has been published in the book. It was sort of surprising:
The correct numbers are
William Holtom 1 WM 21 to 60, 1 WM under21&ov60
2 WF all ages
William Holtom 1 WM under 21 &over 60
1 WF all ages 2slaves 12-50
Spencer Holtom 1 wm 21 to 60, 4 WM under21 &ov60
4 WF all ages 1 slave un12 ov 50
Joseph Holtom 1 WM 21 to 60 1 WMunder 21&ov60
2 WF all ages
That is all for tonight. Note the difference in the figures for WM!!!!

Darren, I have been putting off the inevitable, which is the return to this subject line...smile...became so frustrated with our last attempts at broaching this subject that I layed it aside for awhile...but it is indeed time to address this if we ever intend to push past the stopping place that all our lines have reached. I like your thoughts on the layout/divisions of the families. One thing I would like to add to your message in a means of support or backup is the remark about our James'(Phebe) brother being Spencer Altom(Haltom). If I am reading your message correctly, I indeed, think that the Spencer Haltom of Montgomery County is a brother to our James Altom of Newberry South Carolina and that most of that family line continued to use the Haltom name, rather than Altom. Here is my reasoning on this. From the correspondence of Henry W. Rigby, there were several people from the Montgomery County NC area that married and moved to WHERE ELSE? Henderson County, TN. One of them was Allafair Halton and husband William M. Spencer. Another was Elijah Spencer, brother of Allafair who moved to Henderson County by 1830 and in Madison County in 1840. The Madison County(neighboring couty to Henderson in TN) Haltom's came from North Carolina as well and first settled in Henderson County in the 1830's as well as our line before moving into adjoining Madison County. The Will/inventory of Mary Hatton, Decd. of Madison County which I believe to be the wife of William and eldest of the family in Madison County in 1837 and who did she have as buyers at the sale? for starters some of the Spencer family...CLARK SPENCER. Some of the Jackson Family....JESSE JACKSON, ISSAC JACKSON, THOS. JACKSON...Those of the Haltom Family...Enoch Haltom, John Haltom, Ezekel Haltom, Thomas Haltom, Nathan Haltom...those of the Latham family....Neal Latham, William Latham and others to include the Morris' and Deberry's and Manas(Manness?????)...Does anyone see anything that I am seeing in these names..and locality?????
And further on these same Haltoms moved into S. AR. and Texas and into the same Counties and Communities of the Altoms of our line. I don't see this as any coincidence...A name that is only one letter away from being the same..a name that sounds the same almost when spoken...a movement to different states, yet same communites...
THEN...there is the Latham's in the will that makes me think and look
at the Ann Latham(Haltom)wife of John in Maryland whose son was Spencer.....Thus
the Spencer in North Carolina was the son of the John and Ann of Maryland
and he in turn had a son William who married Mary and moved from Montgomery
County, NC. to Henderson County, TN. to Madison County, TN where he and she
died and their descendants moved(some of them) from TN in Texas and AR.,
and into the same areas as our line. I think that the Maryland Spencer is
probably the son of Joseph that appears on the Census in Maryland and that
the Spencer mentioned in the will of John moved to N. C. where his brothers
were after the will of John was probated as he seems to appear about 2 years
later in records in NC......WOW...I HOPE THIS IS NOT TO CONFUSING FOR ANYONE....I
see what I am trying to say clearly, but trying to explain it is a totally
different story......Linda

I need to retract or correct the last of the above message...from where
I state 'Thus the Spencer in North Carolina was the son of John and Ann of
Maryland...that is/was speculation on my part and NOT ACCURATE. And the Maryland
Spencer appears to be the SON of John and Ann and not the son of Joseph.
I apologize for the confusion on this. The Spencer in NC may be the son of
the older William in NC, but unsure at this time.

One other remark on the name is this...for many that might not realize
it, my line of Altom's for as long as I can tell you about has been pronounced
as ALL TUM (Altom).....thus Altom and Haltom sounds extremely close and we
must all remember that back in the early 1800's most could not read or write,
so how it was spelled usually depended on the person interrupting the spoken
name. And if they were unaware of the actual spelling of the name, it makes
sense that has education progressed among children that in whatever manner
the name had come to be known as in documents and census takers reports usually
became the spelling taught and learned by the children.
