Federal Pensions Part 1

FEDERAL PENSIONS for surname of LAND. These pensions were all read and copied by a Rene Johnson, and David Strickland, for the LAND NEWSLETTER that was published by Ruth Hatten Land…I have copied them as they were published in the actual Newsletters which I had found at the library in Fort Wayne, Indiana . I do not have any further information on these articles so please do not ask about them. Thank you

ADAM LAND b 26 Jan 1842/43 Cumberland Co IL d. 15 Aug. 1913 Juniata, Adams Co NE md 22 Feb. 1868 Humboldt Coles Co IL, Mary Jane Davis b 24 Mar 1842 near Caldwell, Noble Co, OH d ? dau/of Wm. B. Davis and Sarah Jane ? Adam named his parents as ? Land and ? Cox. Service: Pvt. Co K 123 IL Infantry. Enlisted, 13 Aug. 1862, was discharged, 29 Dec 1862. Neither Adam nor Mary Jane had been previously Married. Adam's parents died when he was about two years old and he was raised in the Black family. The Black family had three boys, Thomas, Alexander and Riley Black. Mary Jane reported six brothers and two sisters: Berry B. of Tolano, IL and Joseph S. , Fremont, Wm. Henry of Delta Colorado, and Isaac Davis of Randall, MN. Allen Frederick was Adam's brother-in-law.
Three of Adam's and Mary Jane's children were born in IL and five children were born in Nebraska. IN 1913 there were 5 children living, 29 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Adam's brothers and sisters were: Charles Henry Land, Wm. B. Land, Rachel who md Riley Black, left him and disappeared., and Malinda who md and div. Abram Woodrum who died by 1913.

Enlisted, 4 Aug. 1862 Matoon, IL. He was a Pvt and Sgt in Co K 123 Il Vol Inf. Discharged 3 Jul 1865 or 28 Jun 1865, Nashville, TN. Injured eye and ear 8 Oct. 1862, Perryville, KY. Totally deaf in right ear, later in life was nearly blind. Land and the Woodrum families lived close to each other. Neighbors who gave affidavits: S. B. Woodrum, aged 54 May 4 1904 and Mary F. Woodrum aged 48. Chas H was a butcher.

Land was in the file. AJ's residences included: Decatur, GA near Hutchins Factory from time of Marriage; Cedar Key, FL, from Jul/Aug 1864 until his death from typhoid and pneumonia. Rosanna and children died of 'bone fever and scurvy and diarrhea'.

She had Married (1) 1865 in Covington IN to Jonathan Overbay who died in Covington IN in 1870. She and August had no children. He was a railroad laborer and hotel keeper. No relatives when wife died in 1925. He enlisted 19 Mar 1862 NY Pvt Co K 53 NY Inf transferred as Pvt to Co F 162 NY Vol Inf. HE was discharged 1 Jun 1865. He then enlisted 27 Oct. 1866 as Cpl Co D 15 US Inf discharged 27 Oct. 1869 Washington DC. Invalid Cert#887775. Residences: 5 years in Chicago, IL 1879 to 1884.

26 Oct. 1891 affidavit by August says his name is Melchior Durst was assumed by being only 19 years of age and fearing that his father would manage his release from the army. He signs both names Melchior Durst and August Land. Melchoir was given name from his father in Switzerland. The 1st pension questionairre was signed by August Land and was known as Land after all his enlistment's.

BENJAMIN LAND son of John Land the baker, was born about 1828 Carbrooke, England and died 10 Jul 1898 md (1) Charlotte Sussams b 1821 and d 20 Nov 1851 Carbrooke, England. A letter from the vicar of Carbrooke states that #566 Charlotte Land, Carbrooke, died Nov 20, 1851 age 30. Benjamin then Married (2) 9 Feb. 1852 at St. Johns Timberhill, Norwich, England aMary Ann Dark b 1826 d/o Joseph Dark labourer. Mary Ann aged 26 and Ben aged 24 and a labourer. Ben enlisted 3 Sep 1864 Flint, MI was discharged 28 Jun 1865 Salisbury, NC. Disability Dec 1864, Columbia TN. Mary A Land lived with dAughter and son in law in Cass City, Tuscola, MI after Benjamin's death. She was completely incapacitated. Children of Benjamin and Mary Ann

Eyes injured by sand and sun while on duty 1864 Morris Island, SC. Left Marshalltown with family for CA 1883. Letter dated 12 Nov 1885 says father was killed in Mexican War. His mother dead. Wounded at ChickamAuga, partial deafness Abraham R. Sherkell gave affidavit. Melvina J. Sherkell was gdn for Isabell 1 Jul 1917. Isabell had md (1) John Sherkell who d 3 Aug 1863. She then md (2) John K. Tyler who d 5 Jan 1892. Death certificate and affidavit as to Bible Record in file.

WILLIAM 'PERRY' LAND b abt 1826 KY poss son of Moses and Ann Warren Land, grandson of John and Nightingale Land. One Martha C Land made an affidavit in 1890 for Bennett Land, saying she had known him for about six months, since his discharge 20 Feb 1863. William d 19 Apr 1879, md 7 Aug 1845 Milford, IN Martha C Mastin d 3 Oct 1902. William enlisted 20 Feb 1864 from Greensburg, IN. Pvt Co I 123 Vol Inf and Co D 123 and was discharged 22 May 1865 Madison, IN. Disability black lung at Chattahoochie River, GA. Heart disease Nov 1864. Residences: New Point and Madison. Note: probably other children (John Anderson, Joseph P and Amelia). All dates for widow and soldier affidavits. Also other affidavits in the file. Neither Wm P or Martha C had been married before.

Benjamin was a farmer and carpenter.

29 Feb 1864 to present. Mar and Apr 1864: Absent, sick in Post Hospital. May, June and July, August 1864, present. Jan and Feb 1865. Absent on Vet furlough since Jan 31, 1865. Subsequent Rolls to Aug 31, 1865 present Sep and Oct 1865 absent with Regt as Teammates, ? since Oct 5, 1865 and so reported to 28 Feb 1866. Mar and Apr 1866 present. Mustered out with Company May 15, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, KS, Station of Co. Nature of Sickness not stated. The Regimental Hospital records of either organization are not on file.
13 May 1866: Discharged Ft. Leavenworth KS
28 Jun 1880: Benjamin R. applied for a pension from Lewis Co MO aged 34, 5' 11" tall, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes. Was a resident of Clarke Co MO, gives address as Williamston, Lewis Co MO, at Cape Girardeau March 1864. Took cold while convalescing from the measles, resulting in permanent disease of the lungs. Was treated in post hospital at Cape Giradeau, MO. Since leaving service has lived: Lee Co Iowa, Jefferson Co and Lewis Co, Missouri. Appointed Milo B. Stevens and Co of Chicago IL his attorneys to prosecute his claim.
30 Nov 1887: Larimer Co Colorado. Affidavit by Louis Blackstock and JE Meyers of Bellevue, Laramie Co, Colorado, have known him since 1881" taken 6 May 1889 by affidavit of L. W. Shiver of Adams, IL

Taps were sounded for another old soldier last night and at 7:00, Bennett Land fell asleep to awaken in the presence of the greatest Commander of all. His demise occurred at the home of his step daughter, Mrs. Charles Reagan, on West Sullivan Street and was due to a general breaking down of the system and the ravages of age.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 o'clock from the residence and conducted by Rev. Davidson. Interment at the IOOF cemetery.
Deceased was 78 years of age. He was a Civil War veteran having been a member of Co. E 2nd IN Calvary. There are surviving one son William Land of Spiceland, IN and three daughters, Maria and Martha Land of Spiceland and Lizzie Land of Indianapolis. Also two step daughters, Mrs. Anna Christy and Mrs. Charles Reagan of this city.
Mr. Land had the distinction of being with Sherman at Winchester after the dashing cavalry leader made his famous ride of twenty miles and saved the Union Army away from a rout. Mr. Land always took pride in referring to this particular feature of his army career and well he might. (found in Frankfort, IN Banner 18 April 1905, Wednesday's Daily).
