(UNK) ROBERTS     m.     (UNK)

Children:

Charles Roberts     b. abt 1780 SC     d. abt 1860 Limestone Co., TX
William Roberts     b. abt 1780/1790 GA
Rebecca Roberts Shipp     b. abt 1794       d. after 1850, Walker Co., GA
Elizabeth Roberts Law

The documented evidence we have on the above household has been almost exclusively researched and submitted by Ron and Davine Simmons Hall. Davine descended from Charles Roberts.

The parents of the above household have not yet been discovered. The four named children are known thru various documents. Elizabeth has not been absolutely proven to be sister to the others yet, but there is strong indications that she must be. IF Charles was indeed born ca 1780, and Rebecca was born ca 1794, as various documents indicate; then reason dictates that there probably were more children than have to-date been discovered.

Census records prove that Charles Roberts, Elijah Law and Richard Shipp are about the same age.

Elijah Law shows up in Morgan Co., GA in 1810, paying his pole tax. He may haved moved there after the census was taken. (1810 and 1820 Census appear to be nonexistant; were they even done?).

Elijah Law and Richard Shipp were both in the War of 1812, but neither received a pension nor land grant for their service, pay vouchers yielded no useful information.

Elijah died without a will -- even more reason kin would be administrators of his estate. Charles Roberts is listed as Executor of the estate of Elijah Law in Richmond Co., GA between 1824-28. Richard Shipp is also listed as an administrator of this estate.

According to WFT (disk 14) Richard Shipp was born in Mecklenburg Co. VA. Richard Shipp had 2 wives. His 1st wife was Rebecca Roberts; they married in Columbia Co., GA. Disk 14 states Richard was in Columbia Co., Morgan Co., Walton Co., and Walker Co., GA, with children born in each county. Richard and Rebecca Shipp were on the 1850 census; his age 66 and hers 56. They both died in Walker Co. according to this WFT info. He married 2nd wife Sarah (UNK) there.

Charles and William Roberts are listed with their separate households on the 1830 Monroe Co., Georgia census. The census reflects William with his wife and 10 children between the ages of 1-20 years. The same census reflects the household of Charles with two adult females (one older, who may have been their mother or his mother-in-law), and 5 children. The two brothers are also noted in Columbia, Monroe, Morgan, and Jasper Counties in GA. It is also mentioned that they at one time owned side-by-side plantations in either SC or GA.

We have no information on what became of Elizabeth Roberts Law after the death of Elijah. Rebecca Roberts Shipp we know died in Walker Co., GA; some Shipp descendents insist that Richard and his 2nd wife moved on to Ala. and died there. William Roberts and his entire household appear to have vanished after the 1830 Monroe Co. GA census with the sole exception of one son. Charles Roberts took his motherless children and William's son, Charles, to Texas after selling his Georgia property in 1833.

The remainder of this page will be concerned with the descendents of William through that one known son, Charles. Additional information on the Descendents of Charles Roberts, William's brother, can be found on Patsy Owens' FTM site.

WILLIAM ROBERTS     m.     FRANCES CLAYTON

Children:

Charles Roberts     b. 15 Jul 1813 GA     d. 7 Nov 1897 Limestone Co., TX.

Data on this household is very scant. We have William on earlier records in several counties in Georgia, and, lastly, on the census noted above with his quite large household, listing ten (10) children. And then . . . the entire household (with the exception of who we believe was the oldest son) appears to vanish from all known records.

In an excerpt from the book titled Memorial and Biographical History of Navarro, Henderson, Anderson, Limestone, Freestone, and Leon Counties, Texas: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1893, we read . . .
"CHARLES ROBERTS . . . a son of WILLIAM and FRANCES (CLAYTON) ROBERTS, natives of Georgia. The family is of Irish descent." [This is the only place I have ever seen the name of William's wife given].

If we assume from the date of publication and the title of the book, it is possible that the information detailed was given by William's son himself, or at least by one of his children. So, it is reasonable to accept that the name of William's wife is correct. Claytons were plentiful in the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama during this period; but to-date, no connection has been made with a Frances Clayton Roberts. (There appear to be numerous mis-statements in this article - hopefully this is not one of them).

Records prove that Charles Roberts, son of William and Frances of Georgia, traveled to Texas with his uncle Charles between 1826-1833. The uncle is known to have sold land in Georgia and within 3 months to have applied for entry into Texas in 1833. There is a second Charles listed in that same period, one Charles L. Roberts. We have not discovered yet if that Charles L. Roberts was the son of William and Frances Roberts, or if our Charles was simply included in the household of the uncle.

The son of William and Frances is listed in the household of his uncle on the 1835 Sabine Community, Texas Census, along with his 5 cousins.     Charles turns up on the 1841 Washington Co. TX Tax List and marries Emily Stanley on 4 Feb 1842 in Brenham, Washington Co.     By 1846 Charles is listed on the Walker Co. TX Tax List and his household is listed in Walker Co. on the 1850 census.     By 1860 the family has moved on to Robertson Co., and finally, are in Limestone Co. by the death of Charles in 1897.     Emily died in 1900.     Both are buried in the Ferguson Cemetery, near son Lemuel H., who died in 1890.

CHARLES ROBERTS     m.     EMILY STANLEY

Children:
All previously believed to have been born in Walker Co., Texas.     However, more recent research seems to indicate that at least the three youngest may have been born in either Robertson or Limestone Co.

John Roberts     b. 15 Nov 1843     d. 27 Dec 1900   Limestone Co, TX
William S. Roberts     b. 1845     d. after Jan 1901 probably McCulloch Co., TX
Felix Houston Roberts     b. 14 Feb 1847     d. 13 Jan 1925, Carter Co., OK
Lemuel H. "Lem" Roberts     b. 11 Dec 1849     d. 14 Feb 1890, Limestone Co., TX
Frances E. "Fannie" Roberts Bullard     b. ca 1850     d. probably Montague Co., TX
Louisa Roberts Thompson     b. ca 1851
Charles C. Roberts II     b. 20 July 1855     d. 14 Dec 1925, Thornton, Limestone Co., TX
Calvin Luther Roberts     b. 20 Aug 1856     d. 13 May 1948, Thornton, Limestone Co., TX
Alexander Hamilton Roberts     b. 14 Apr 1858     d. 11 Aug 1937, Falls Co., TX
James Edward Roberts     b. 10 Dec 1861     d. 29 June 1928, Thornton, Limestone Co, TX
Mary Ann Roberts Jones     b. aft 1861
Martha J. Roberts       d. infancy

The 1850 Walker Co., TX census dated 4 Sept. 1850 lists Frances as being one month old, making her likely born in July or August. However, the 1860 Robertson Co. TX census lists her as 12 years old and married within the year!! Louisa is not listed on the 1850 census, but is shown as 10 years old on the 1860 census. It is likely Louisa may have been born mid-1851.

JOHN ROBERTS     m.     MARY ADALINE DAVIS

Mary Adaline Davis b. 15 Nov 1848 d. 11 Feb 1890

Children:

Felix Calloway (F.C.) Roberts     b. 15 Nov 1865     d. 20 Feb 1940, Limestone Co., TX

John C. Roberts     b. 1872
James F. Roberts     b. Jan 1875
Annie J. Roberts     b. 25 April 1876     d. 6 July 1884   Limestone Co., TX
Rachel May Roberts Archer     b. 1 May 1880     d. 7 March 1953, Limestone Co., TX
Albert "Ab" Weaver Roberts     b. 19 April, 1881     d. 12 June, 1960   Limestone Co., TX

Rachel is shown as 2 years old on the 1880 Limestone Co. census dated 11 June, 1880, but her death certificate shows her birthdate as above.     John C. is listed as 8 years old on the same census.     James and Albert are not listed on the 1880 census.
Lutitia is found, widowed, in Robertson County, TX with her 3 children in 1900. We do not find her in 1910, and by 1920, her two surviving children are in the household of her sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Alex Archer.     However, in 2001, her nephew recounts visiting with Aunt Tishi at her house in Limestone Co. - and produces a photo of himself in front of her house - in about 1930.     If anybody has information on Aunt Tishi, we would really appreciate hearing from you.
We would also appreciate any/all information on the two brothers, John and James Roberts, sons of John & Adeline Roberts.
