11/05/1999, Friday - Reading Assessment.(age: 5 years, 8 months, 18 days) Nicole continues to do really well in school. We recently received her reading assessment test results. This assessment is for both kindergarten and first grade with slightly different interpretations for each grade level. Nicole did really well. She got all the top scores in the reading and writing categories. In comprehension and one other section she got some the next notch down, but still very high. We're quite proud of her. She's working very hard. 11/10/1999, Wednesday - Love Notes. Blessings. (age: 5 years, 8 months, 23 days) Nicole really likes to write love notes. Occationally she'll bring one to me with a big heart drawn around the "I love daddy" words. The other day she set out to write love notes to all her friends. She wrote them out, sounding out their names and asking for help if she got stumped. She made one little modification. For her friends that are boys, she wrote "like" instead of "love". Tina asked the kids the other day at lunch to tell her one blessing in their life. Nicole said "God made my knee better." 11/16/1999, Tuesday - Rather Do Math. Thank you Note. Soccer. FIRST LOOSE TOOTH! (age: 5 years, 8 months, 29 days) Last Thursday (11/11) Nicole asked me if the next day was Friday. When I said it was, a look of disappointment came across her face. She then told me that all they did on Fridays was play and cook. She said there was no "writing center" or "math center". Now that's a good student who'd rather do math than play. On Friday they also wrote thank-you notes to the firefighters they visited. Nicole loves to write notes
and she always amazes me with how well she can write. Her note to the firefighters said "I like fire trucks.
It was fun when we got to go in the ambulance." No kidding, she wrote all that. Now I don't know how she
spelled everything, but it sounded like she only got one tip from the teacher. She also drew a picture.Nicole had her last soccer game last Saturday. With each game she kept getting better. Overall she seems to be more of a defensive player. She did her best work kicking the ball away from an opposing player. On Saturday she ran after one player that had broken out way ahead of the others. Nicole got in front of her and kicked the ball away just before she reached the goal. It was very exciting. After the game we had a pizza party and all the girls got a trophy. It was really a good experience for Nicole. Milestone! It's now official. Nicole has her first loose tooth. She's growing up so fast. 11/18/1999, Thursday - First Tooth Lost! (age: 5 years, 9 months, 1 day) Well, Nicole has lost her first tooth at school yesterday. She was exactly 5 ¾ years old.
We had her put it in a little china jewelry box on the night stand by her bed. When she woke up this morning she
found eight quarters.Last night we watched Nicole's friend Rachel for a while. While they were playing they began discussing the Tooth Fairy. Rachel said "There's no Tooth Fairy". Nicole said something like "I knew there wasn't. You don't see any fairies around here. I think it's Mom and Dad." Later that night while I was putting her to bed,
Nicole asked me directly "who is the Tooth Fairy". We've always de-emphasized things like Santa
Claus and the Tooth Fairy, so I just said "it's someone very special". With that, Nicole replied "It's
Mom and Dad." with a big smile. I just smiled too. |
