Body Types

I decided to start my project with bodies because there were only three types and I had all of them. Not the most noble motive, but it works for me. Anyways... I wrote a document to track everything, please forgive the dry, boring, science teacher-ish sound of the rest of this document... thinking like that helps me think, so I end up sounding like that when I type!

Definition of Body Pattern
Thus far, there are three body patterns -- Normal (N), which is solid gray body with darkening near the peduncle, Tuxedo (T), which is normal to the middle of the body below the dorsal fin and black from there on, and Cobra (K) which is a normal body with black streaking. No idea yet on how these inherit.

Questions about F1 generation

Q. What do you get when you breed Normal to Tuxedo?
Q. What do you get when you breed Normal to Cobra?
Q. What do you get when you breed Tuxedo to Cobra?

Conclusions based on F1 generation

The body pattern in inherited from the Female fish, although it is expressed in the Male fish. The exception to this is the Cobra (C) gene. What occurs when this gene is crossed depends on the exact cross. Male Cobra to Female Normal you get a Cobra body. When a male Cobra is crossed on a female Tuxedo, the result is a NEW body pattern! I am calling this pattern the Flame pattern, since it resembles the flames painted on cars. When a male Normal is crossed on a female Cobra the result is a Normal body. When a male Tuxedo is crossed on a female Cobra the result is also a Normal body. This leads to the following questions for the F2 generation:

Q. Does the Flame body pattern breed true?
Q. Is there a dominant/recessive relationship between Normal and Tuxedo?

The answers will be forthcoming as I have time to research further into this subject.

Heh... I sound like I'm about 70 years old and about to hit somebody with a ruler. Anyways, the question links above lead to a PICTORAL chart of the results. These pages could take some time to load due to the number of pictures. You've been warned. 8) Also, I would like to apologize for the green tints seen in some of the pictures. I don't have any clue how they got there, and I know they are extremely ugly, but I have no clue how to remove them! The guppies at least are accurately represented, which is why I'm not going to take the time to track down where exactly the error occured and fix it. If you know what happened, feel free to email me! Always willing to learn! 1
