2/14 Update: Here are the game grades from the basketball game Saturday against Michigan State:
Andy Kowske: C+
Kowske was about the only Badger who did a decent job on the boards, while the rest of the team was absolutely hammered there. Kowske outrebounded Hutson 7 to 4. Added some offense, though wasn't allowed to establish much inside to speak of.
Charlie Wills: C-
Fouled out in limited minutes as he found himself just out-talented. 2 assists and 4 boards in limited minutes.
Roy Boone: C
Not all that different than what he has been all season: ineffective from the perimeter but a few nice moves to the hoop, passed the ball well but turned it over too much. Did a pretty good job on Cleaves, forcing him to shoot primarily from the perimeter (which he flat out cannot do).
Kirk Penney: F
Buckner mentioned that Bennett thinks Penney's legs are gone as he has not had a break in so long and based on how he has played recently, I am inclined to believe him. Couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat, overpowered inside, and sloppy with the ball.
Mike Kelley: D
Killed any chance at getting off to a good start by committing two quick fouls, limiting him to only 16 minutes the entire game. Was reasonably effective when he was in there (though didn't shoot), but simply cannot put his team in that kind of hole early.
Jon Bryant: D
Had trouble getting his shot against the athletic Spartans and when he was wide open, could not make them pay.
Mark Vershaw: F
Totally manhandled inside. Every time he got the ball down low, MSU just wouldn't let him move an inch towards the hoop, resulting in a 1 for 10 shooting night. Blistered on the boards and had trouble chasing down Grainger on the perimeter on defense. Didn't even garner an assist. Easily Vershaw's worst game of the year.
Maurice Linton: B
Continued his slow and steady rise towards getting consistent minutes with a nice 10 point outburst, coming primarily on a variety of medium range jumpers. As a bonus, other than one bad traveling call, Maurice took much better care of the ball as well. However, like most of the team, Maurice was overwhelmed on the glass.
Travon Davis: D
Very limited minutes due to bad defensive matchups again. Didn't contribute when on the floor. Man is he quick, but he cannot shoot one lick.
Duany Duany: B
Got decent minutes when Kelley went out as they needed someone to check Peterson. Hit a couple of long threes's to give the crowd a faint spark of hope, but couldn't keep it going.
Faust, Swartz, Smith: INC
(though Swartz made a nice move to the hoop).
