Jesse Gill's Tribute to Donovan Bailey
Donovan Bailey began running for Canada in 1994. Shortly after he became one of the world's greatest athletes. His crowning achievement was in 1996 when he brought home gold at the Atlanta Summer Olympics, shattering the world record in the 100 meters. This moment erased the Ben Johnson tragedy and reclaimed Canada's track and field prestige. Bailey continued to shine in Atlanta as the anchor of the gold medal winning 4 x 100 relay team, also bringing the Americans winning streak to an end. On Monday, August 6th, 2001 Donovan Bailey said goodbye to track for good and retired at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton after finishing sixth in his 100-metre semifinal at the world championships. The 100 metre record Bailey had set in Atlanta has been beat several times since that historic day in 1996. However, I still feel it is one of Canada's greatest sports moments.
