That was followed by many years of excitement. '90-'91 season when Rocket returned the ball on Colorado in the Orange Bowl that would have won the game, except for the bad clip call. The amazing victory over Penn State that Mirer, Bettis and Brooks executed, I've never been more excited over a ND victory than that. The cinderella team in '93 that all the analyst thought would finish with the worst record in recent years and their upset of FSU. The ND-Miami games, Lou jumping into the melee. Those are the memories I will keep of Lou Holtz and his era at Notre Dame.
For those of us who didn't get to see Rockne and Ara, Lou was, is, the greatest coach we have seen. Whoever gets the job of head coach next season has a closet full of shoes to fill, not least of which is that person's predecessor, Lou Holtz.
