Brett - you have meant so much to Los Angeles in particular, baseball in general, and, really, ANYONE who has ever had any kind of a challenge. You are what baseball is all about! Your heart, your courage, your unflagging love for the game of baseball drew us to you. You never got many of the honors and awards you deserved but looking back through the years...... YOU were one of the BEST!! A dedicated, go-getter - no ball was out of reach or pitcher unhittable. You showed us time and time again that while you may be small in size......NO ONE can top you in heart!

You are my hero. I never once saw you play a game in which you put anything less then everything you had. No matter how easy the put-out, you always seemed to made it close. No matter how tough the play you never failed to make it look graceful and easy. No matter how good people said you were, you never took anything for granted..... working and pushing to make yourself just THAT much better. You were there day after day to remind us of the beauty, honestly, loyalty and spirit that is the core of baseball. You always had the time (or took it anyway) for the little people (us fans), no matter whether you REALLY felt like it or not. And you always had a smile and a kind word for each of us who stopped you for an autograph. You showed yourself to be a loving father and a generous and kind person. I cried when you ended up with the Mets in '95 and did a dance for joy when you were traded back (my Mom called me at work to let me know)!! I was devastated when you were diagnosed with cancer and watched with hope and love as you struggled back into form to come back late in the year! As I watched you at that first game back on the sixth of August last year, I was overwhelmed with pride, respect, and admiration! You taught us all a lesson that day in the wonders of perseverance and what you can do when you put your mind to it! Brett, you are truly, in every sense of the word, a hero!
