Matt Hogan

For those of you who have never heard of the Incredible Diamonds, they are a Chico-based band, playing rock and blues all around Chico. They play at places like Duffy's Tavern, LaSalle's, Madison Bear Garden, and many other places.
Matt Hogan is the lead singer and guitarist for Incredible Diamonds. I've met him three times, once at Duffy's and the other two at LaSalle's, just before his shows. One time some band opened for them at LaSalle's (some totally unknown band from Arizona), when they finished they said they have to go back home and mow the lawn in the morning!

Our second time was at Duffy's where he got some beer. Me and some friends wanted to see Mo'Tets later on. Matt had some beer in a highball glass with Alka-Seltzer. We talked for a while, and Matt said of the Mo'Tets "It's just as good as, or even better than, KCHO's jazz program. I watched the concert, and then I thought, Matt's right, this is really cool jazz. Unfortunately my friends wanted to go somewhere else (for reasons of affordable drinks, not the music, we regretted leaving early, we missed seeing Mike play the bass)

The third time was, as a matter of fact, last night. i was dressed up as Matt, complete with glasses, suit, tie, etc, and with name tag, but many people didn't recognize me, except for the woman behind the cash register at Starbuck's. Anyway we were at LaSalle's just an hour before showtime, and one guy got Matt to come back and see us (we were on the terrace), and it was funny to see two Matt Hogans at the same time (the real Matt Hogan was dressed as Gilligan.

Anyway, when I was dressed as Matt Hogan, everyone mistook me for a lawyer or stockbroker. Typical, since not many people know the Incredible Diamonds. What a shame. But come to think of it, if Incredible Diamonds had a record deal, they'd be a lot more famous. But then if they did, everyone would have known who I was, and Haloween wouldn't be as fun.

NEW!
Last night (14. November 1997) I went to see the Incredible Diamonds at Duffy's, and I watched Matt play a bunch of oldies (not the best known ones, but they were good anyway), and I saw how he played the guitar on Hippy Hippy Shake. It was hilarious: he had the guitar behind his head. He's got some good quotes, too!

Eg. dialog 6. December 1997:
Josh: Hey man can I buy you a drink?
Matt: Sure man, I'll have a bud...thanks man!
2 minutes later
Josh: Here you go
Matt: Shit man, thanks. Hey, did you know that "The Mavericks" are the greatest rock band ever."
Josh: No, I did not know that. Thanks

Incredible Diamonds concert at Duffy's: 13.12.97
Note! There was a very drunken guest singer, see if you spot him in the photos (it's very obvious!)

Matt Hogan: " What took you so long, dammit!"

"Listen, I have an announcement to make: If you're drunk, you need to get the f**k out of Duffy's, OK? If you're drunk, get on out of here, let the other drunks come in, all right, because you've had enough. Go on, get out of here. No, just kidding. Now, if you're horny - uh, never mind."

    New! 9.4.98: Duffy's concert

I came to Duffy's pretty late, after O'Connell was closed, working on this project:

    Josh's shapes!

Anyway I got to Duffy's about midnight, and they were charging $1 cover!

Matt was playing with a new set of guests, plus this female vocalist who sang on two or three songs. Then I ran into two different groups: one person with whom I had a German class (yes I'm also a German Languages and Literatures major as well as a Computer Science major) and someone who graduated from my high school in Cupertino (Homestead High, the same school that Steve Wozniak graduated from, he's the founder of Apple Computer!). That guy took German from De Anza College and was once a student of one of my science teachers but took another subject a bit removed from science. We had pretty interesting conversations.

The next person was "Eve", one of my roommates from last year (who doesn't live in Chico anymore) thought she was a real wierdo! She recognized me as "Number Four". She and I talked about Zac and Marko.

The good thing is, Eve likes the Incredible Diamonds.

Day on the Green @ Chico State - Lassen/Shasta Hall Lawn

Matt had just two of his core members (see website for details) play at Day on the Green, and they were the closing band. The real die-hard music fans were sitting on the lawn watching the band, and as expected, some even stood up to dance.

But then, there were some people messing around a little too close to Matt's truck (when he was giving his quote on his next song, a ballad). (QUOTE YET TO BE INSERTED) They stopped.

Matt did his usual getting offstage with his remote-controlled guitar, and played his guitar behind his back. More photos are yet to come!

He played at Duffy's later that night, but I didn't go (shame!)

Latest news 20. May 2000: Matt Hogan now owns the Mr Lucky's bar in downtown Chico. Featured is a tattoo parlor!

Thanks to George the Cat for that info!
