Thomas Pringle came to South Africa in 1820, and although he was only resident here for six years, he has left an idelible mark on South African letters. His poetry, collected in African Sketches show a man with deep sympathy for the land and its people.
He edited the South African Commercial Advertiser which was proscribed by Lord Charles Somerset causing Pringle to leave the Colony. Pringle was vindicated by the granting of freedom of speech to the Cape and the recall of Somerset. Pringle was one of the key liberal figures in South African affairs in the 1820s.
