off a month-long series of spiri-
tually connected events launched
by the opening of a show on Fri-

The theme of the opening

tive tools that can be used for
healing and personal insight.

Mandalas - July
14
thru August 7
The concept of imperma-
nence and change in the physical
world is underscored by Bud-
dhists. After meticulously de-
signing intricate mandalas, the
colored sands are brushed away
in the wind as an offering to the
universal forces. The elements
of opposite forces, east and west,
water and fire, male and female,
play an essential role in the ex-
pression of mandala symbols.
The psychiatrist Carl Jung
saw the mandala as a representa-
tion of the unconscious self and
employed it as a diagnostic tool.
It helped to identify disorders in
right and left brain functioning
which cause imbalance in per-
Knowledge of Mandalas is
taken from the ancient practice
of Buddhism and Hinduism.
Native Americans, Japanese
Tantric Buddhists and Tibetan
Buddhists all recognize the man-
dala as a symbol, a chart or geo-
metric pattern representing the
spiritual form of the cosmos. A
microcosm of a spiritual nature

constructed and out of materials
which came from the remains of
the bison - horns, bones, fur and
hide. The generally symmetrical
designs focus attention at the
center of its symbolic configura-
tion and serve as a focal point in
the practice of meditation.

teachers have embraced the prac-
tice in behavior modification
through mandala workshops for
mentally and emotionally af-
fected clients allowing the indi-
vidual to represent their current
spiritual state in a visual form.

Mandala Workshop ...
... Shekinah Studio, 982 Barret Avenue -- July 15
The Flying Shaman origi-
nated in a small art studio in
Louisville during 2004. It didn't
take flight until August 2005 and
has been in a beautiful dream
state since then. Tara Reming-
ton, artist, teacher and designer,
began preparation for a grant
project to teach at-risk youth us-
ing mandalas as her main teach-
ing tool. The mandala is an an-
cient symbol that means circle in
the Sanskrit language, and is not
uniquely affiliated with any one
religion but instead has been
used in many cultures as a uni-
versal symbol for unity.
Through the creative process
and arts integra-
tion, Tara devel-
oped a series of
mandalas for t-
shirts & multicul-
tural floor mats.
She feels that the
ancient art of
mandala making
