The latest academic fad here, at least among those predisposed to extreme arcana, is research into the origin of several texts attributed to some first century itinerant polymath named Vlatibertacus. The titles are (1) The Cinaedopolis of Vlatibertacus Haeresiarches, and (2) Erotomachia. While I was in London two years ago, I saw the word Erotomachy mentioned in a leaflet that had something to do with Luther Blissett. Anybody know anything? Neither of the texts I mentioned above is extant, but there are reportedly references elsewhere, especially to an idea first described in the Cinaedopolis, which smells to me like a hoax. It's called "anacoustic dendroptotic allophony." What it means is something like this: if a tree falls in a forest, and no one is present to hear it, it makes a sound -- but not the sound you'd hear if you were there. It might resemble horse hooves on a pavement or bells or a dinner conversation or the music of the sph res. This is supposed to be an anti-Pythagorean heresy. The Cinaedopolis also discusses the effects of certain musical modes, and might be a satire on classical Greek essays: one of the modes can cause babies to cry or the end of the world. Another mode, when played on certain instruments, induces an orgasm i listeners. The modes have fanciful names like Cimmerian, Ogygian, Icenian, Hyperborean, and Epidian. The most interesting notion in the Cinaedopolis, to me, is the theory that when a sound is produced, each time it echoes off a wall or a rock it sounds different, at first imperceptibly, but if it repeats often enough it starts to sound like something com letely different. If I speak a word and it echoes long enough, eventually I'll hear a different word. The only mention I know of Vlatibertacus is in a late Old Irish collection of verse and invective called An Run Mhaicc Fhlaithbertaig in Fhilid. The original manuscripts sit in a chapel in Iona, Scotland, and in the Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale Uni ersity, but someone told me it was stolen from Yale. Please let me know if anyone has an inkling of what I'm talking about, especially about Erotomachy. Tom |
