Re: PLEASE GET INVOLVED NOW
1. The Governor with Senate support wants to break every promise ever made to state employees regarding "property rights" in their jobs in return for work below average compensation for similarly situated positions in the civilian workforce.
2. The Governor refuses to take a 53 million dollar stimulus to enhance unemployment benefits and yet, wants to lay-off employees in a "down economy" This only adds to the misery already being experienced by thousands of workers and their families.
3. State employees " in large part as a result of the efforts of "MASE" have long associated the Mississippi House of Representative as giving them a "fair shake" and as a body of decent men and woman that "check" the Governors plans to void or bypass established SPB policies and procedures based upon Mississippi Code. Efforts to politicize state employment and mold agencies to his will are never ending in this administration. This is a poor approach to government as the needs of the people served go on from administration to administration regardless of which political party occupies the Governors position. That is the purpose of state service protections in the first place as it ensures continuity of service to the citizens and seamless transition with minimal disruption when administrations change.
4. This is the wrong time and wrong economy in which to place more workers on the unemployment rolls. Keep in mind that well over 65 percent of the state workforce is female and in many instances, these women are the sole source of household income.
5. As the economy continues to get worse more people require services and the workload increases. In many agencies only so many clients can be handled a day per service provider. This includes services provided by the Departments of Human Services, Medicaid, Vocational Rehab, Health and Public Safety for Driver License/renewal/testing etc. The agencies have done studies and know how long it takes to service the average client. In this respect, they know how many a trained worker can service in a workday. Cutting service workers adds to the burden of citizens requiring service "now" and will result in extended "wait times" to receive services. THE STATE WORKERS DEPEND ON THE HOUSE FOR A FAIR DEAL. DON'T LET THESE WORKERS DOWN.

The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) held its 30th Annual Legislative Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, MS, November 29, through December 3, 2006. The theme for this year’s conference was “Seeing Beyond Vision. Leadership. Action” The labor luncheon, held Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, was one of the conference highlights.
The NBCSL Labor Round Table unanimously selected Brenda Scott, President of MASE/CWA, Local 3570, in Jackson to receive their Local Labor Leader’s Award. They determined that she exemplifies outstanding support for labor on behalf of all working men and women.
Rep. James Evans, District 70, received the Community Leadership Award at the same luncheon. ‘Jim’, as he prefers to be called, is a former professional football player with the New York Giants and a double dues paying member of CWA (The Guilds and MASE/CWA). Rep. Evans has authored numerous labor-friendly bills in the Mississippi legislature and prizes his anti-privatization bill as trophy legislation. Jim has served in the state legislature since 1992 and is a national AFL-CIO field representative.
