PETITION President Clinton and Janet Reno want the Department of Justice – i.e. the federal government -- to sue the tobacco companies for $25 billion. This in addition to the $206 billion dollar settlement with 46 states. They want to use funds from the Veterans Administration and other agencies to finance this... borrowing from Peter to sue Paul. And illegal as well! Yet some people think only Big Tobacco uses lies, deceit and trickery to gain its ends. Congress is waffling on the issue – the house voted against the plan one day, 24 hours later voted 215 to 183 for it: NO (against proposal): 35 Democrats, 147 Republicans, 1 Independent
If such a political greed fest were to happen guess who would pay the $25 billion. So take a stand - or watch your cigarette prices take another big leap.
Help settle the issue with a personal petition to your Representatives in Washington. Write your own letter or save ours to disk, open it in your word processor, edit if desired, print it out and send to the Representatives in your district. (It hasn't reached the Senate yet -- that may come later.)
