The Latin phrase appears on the official coat of arms adopted in 1939. State Bird: Yellowhammer, adopted in 1927. This member of the woodpecker family, also called a flicker (Colaptes Aratus), got its name from the way it hammers trees with its beak and the flash of yellow it displays on the underside of its wings. The bird's colors of gray and yellow were said to resemble the uniform of a Confederate cavalryman, and an Alabama regiment of the Confederate Army wore yellowhammer feathers in their hats. These stories and the widespread abundance of the species led to the yellowhammer's selection as the state bird.PRESIDENTIAL VOTING | | 1996 [3] Dole (R) 50.8% Clinton (D) 33.3% Perot (Ref) 10.9% 1992 [3] Bush (R) 39.5% Clinton (D) 30.3% Perot (I) 28.4% 1988 [3] Bush (R) 59.6% Dukakis (D) 36.3% 1984 [3] Reagan (R) 66.6% Mondale (D) 29.9% 1980 [3] Reagan (R) 54.3% Carter (D) 26.4% 1976 [3] Ford (R) 57.9% Carter (D) 35.7% 1972 [3] Nixon (R) 58.1% McGovern (D) 34.6% Schmitz (Am.Ind.) 7.2% 1968 [3] Nixon (R) 45.2% Humphrey (D) 42.6% Wallace (Am.Ind.) 12.0% 1964 [3] Johnson (D) 65.9% Goldwater (R) 34.0% 1960 [3] Nixon (R) 50.9% Kennedy (D) 49.1% 1956 --- 1952 --- 1948 --- (Alaska became a U.S. state in 1959) | | | | | | | | | | Links | | | | | | Your Feedback | | | | | | | | |
