Pregnancy-Specific Abortion Rate of Choice.
A Note on Concepticide Statistics.
June 22, 1998.

Statistics focused on women having one or more recognized pregnancies in their lifetimes will indicate the "choice" aspect of elective abortions. A helpful statistic in this area is the Pregnancy-Specific Abortion Rate of Choice (PSARC). This lifetime figure estimates the percentage of women who choose to have one or more abortions by comparing them only to women who have one or more recognized pregnancies.

In the U.S. the Abortion Rate of Choice (ARC) is about 44%. Meaning among U.S. women either having a recognized pregnancy or not, 44% are projected at 1992 rates to have one or more elective abortions in their lifetimes. The PSARC will be higher than ARC if some women in the population never have a recognized pregnancy. The PSARC is thus more indicative of "choice" because it counts only women with recognized pregnancies.

Calculation of the PSARC is more involved than the ARC. However, the PSARC yields clearer information about the issue of "choice" concerning the elective termination of a recognized pregnancy. This is true because only women with recognized pregnancies will face the issue of "choice" on the basis of real standing. In contrast, statistics which are not specific to pregnancy may include women who will never have a recognized pregnancy.
