The Lancaster is the Apple Valley Flyers club logo, how this came to be is
explained in the following by Jeremy Dann of the Wings of Wellington: The Lancaster
was the aircraft Wally Gates was flight engineer on. Wally was one of the founding members
of the Apple Valley Flyers. The Lancaster aircraft that crashed into North mountain
years ago killing all the crew was suppossed to have Wally aboard. He was replaced before
the flight by a flight engineer named McCarrol - and was killed in the accident. His son
Dave MacCarroll was eligible to win the Wally Gates award many years later as a club
member - odd twist of fate eh? The Lancaster has been represented on club logos and
paraphenalia as long as I can remember.
Cheers
Jeremy Dann
