The F-22 is being developed as a long-term replacement for the Air Force's veteran F-15s. Winner of the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition over the rival YF-23A, the Lockheed-Boeing-General Dynamics design was unveiled to the public on August 29, 1990. YF-22A number one, shown flying over the mountains of Southern California, was built at Lockheed's Palmdale, California, facility. The basic armament of the new fighter will be a single 20mm cannon and up to eight internally-carried air-to-air missiles. [ Home | Kelly | F-16 | F-117 | Free Photo | X-33 | T-birds ]
