![]() | Andy received his Amateur Radio license in 1965 and after finishing school, he hired on the Research Vessel, Vema as a radio operator in April 1969. This gave him the opportunity to not only work DX but to be the DX himself. He visited many exotic places using callsigns such as CR4BC, CT3AS, TF3EA, TU2BB, ZD9BP and ZS1JD |
After his tour around the world, he came home in May of 1970 and bought a new Ford Mustang and began his own tour of the USA, visiting those hams he had met on the air such as: W5RBO, VE2LO/W6, N7RO, W7EKM, KR6KN and at K5HYB where he enjoyed Southern Hospitality and being exposed to such things as: Purple Hull Peas, Fried Okra, and Corn bread. Not to mention that melodious sound of Locusts in the trees outside his bedroom window!! While in Arkansas, he met other DXers such as K5YY and W5MQ.
Through the years Andy accumulated well over 300 countries on all modes and bands from 1.8 Mhz to 1296 Mhz and even some EME and was always at the top of the Contest Results. He worked over 80 countries on 50 Mhz along with a contact with VK2ASZ [52mhz] which was a Canadian record at that time.
In 1988, the joint Canadian - Soviet Ski-Trek Expedition took place with Skiers from both countries taking a 4 month journey across the North Pole from Canada to the USSR. The main Canadian base station was CI8C located at Resolute Bay, NWT with Canadian Amateur Radio Operators: VE3HO, VE1ASJ, VO1QF, VE3XN, VE3ICR, VE3CKP, VE3LVW, VE7HQ, VO1SA, VE3MFT and VE3CPU.
These days, Andy is not quite as active on the HF bands but still operates the CQWW Contests from VE9DH and also some EME from VE1ALQ. Andy is also active on the Internet via Email and ICQ. Although he no longer uses the old familiar callsign, VE1ASJ, he has passed that callsign to his son Randy who is already following in his father's footsteps.
