1000 Stars (The Crossing)

Lyrics

FACTS:

[Lewis Crow]: "Protect and survive" is a British Cold War-era Civil Defense slogan, like "duck and cover" was in the US. I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was a satirical cartoon or comedy routine on UK TV with the same title.

[Steve Bullman]: The phrase "protect and survive" has been used by BC and Runrig because around 1983-84 our wonderful government of the time issued a booklet to all UK public libraries, describing how to survive a nuclear war by crouching underneath tables or doors removed from their hinges (and, though not explicitly stated, crossing your fingers). The animated film "When the Wind Blows", that had parts of the sound-track by Roger Waters, showed the "process" (might even have shown the booklet). The title of the booklet was "Protect & Survive".

George Coney dedicated a complete page to the "Protect & Survive" booklet.

STUART'S EXPLANATION:

INTERPRETATIONS:

[Lewis Crow]: If the bomb hits, we're all toast.

[Markus Schoeller]: A while ago someone wrote that the black queen stands for nuclear weapons and the whole song is about how people in Europe felt about the balance between the super powers and the possibility of having a nuclear war which is limited to Europe.
