| About the the Cambridge Drawing Society Please note that the Copyright of all images displayed on these pages is the property of the artist concerned. The society must be one of the oldest in the UK, having been founded in 1882. Despite its name, it does not just show drawings, but a wide range of paintings, mixed media items, batik, sculpture and limited edition prints (not photographs or digital prints). Membership is limited to artists living within a thirty mile radius of Great St Mary's, Cambridge. Each April/May the main selected art exhibition takes place at the Cambridge Guildhall. This is the opportunity for candidates to apply to become members, by submitting four recent works for consideration by the selection committee. This committee includes the President and up to six current members of the Society, and in addition there are normally two guest selectors. In 2006 the guest selectors were Jane Bednarczyk and Anne Jarman, and 264 works were shown in the exhibition. During its long history, the society has had many distinguished names on its membership list Gwen Raverat, Cecil Beaton and Ronald Searle to name but three of them. Madame Raverat was a member for 56 years, and President for 16 years. The Society continues to provide a showcase in Cambridge for the visual arts, where amateur and professional artists can show their work together. New candidates for membership are required to submit four works to the annual exhibition selection committee.
