Lafayette, Louisiana, with a population of approximately 108,000, is located in Lafayette Parish on I-10, 130 miles northwest of New Orleans and 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico.
Lafayette was originally named Vermillionville after the Vermillion Bayou, an orangey bayou that runs nearby. It was renamed in the 1880's when the railroad came into town.
