7 What Brings Ye Shame, Do Not Unto Others, Nor Unto Thyself, For The Highest Of Duties Is Self Integrity.

8 Let Balanced Order Be Practiced In Words As In Deeds; Then Make The Habit To Never Act Inconsiderately.

9 Remember That Death Is Appointed To All, And Possessions Here Gladly Gathered, Must Here Be Left Behind.

10 Whatever Sorrow The Fate Of The Heavens May Here Send Us, Bear; Whatever May Befall Us Let Us Bear With Patience Unmurmuring.

11 To Relieve It, So Far As We Can, Is Permitted, But Reflect That Not Much Misfortune Has Destiny Given To The Virtuous.

12 The Opinion Of The People Is Inconsistent, Now Good, And Now Evil; So Let Them Not Intimidate Thee, Nor Keep Thee From Thy Purpose.

13 If False Slander Come To Thy Ears, Bear It In Patience, Yet That Which I Am Now Declaring, Fulfill It Faithfully.

14 Let No One With Speech Or With Deeds Ever Deceive Thee, To Do Or To Say What Is Not The Most Noble.

15 Consider Before Acting, That Nothing Stupid Result; To Act Thoughtlessly Is The Role Of A Fool.

16 Whatever Will Not Later Incur Remorse, Follow Through With.

17 Do Nothing Outside Of Thy Comprehension, Yet Learn That Which May Be Useful; Thus Shall Thy Life Grow Joyful.

18 Do Not Neglect The Health Of The Body, Keep Measure In Eating And Drinking, And Every Exercise Of The Body, And By Measure Is Meant What Will Not Later Induce Pain.

19 Follow Clean Habits Of Life, But Not The Luxurious, And Avoid All Things Which Will Arouse Envy.

20 At The Wrong Time, Never Be Unrestrained, As If Ye Did Not Know What Was Proper; Nor Show Thyself Stingy, For An Appropriate Measure Is Ever The Best.

21 Do Only Those Things Which Will Not Harm Thee, And Deliberate Before Acting.

22 Never Let Slumber Approach Thy Wearied Eyelids, Ere Thrice Ye Review What Ye That Day Have Done: Wherein Have Ye Sinned? What Did Ye? What Duty Has Been Neglected; All, From First To Last, Review.

23 If Ye Have Erred, Grieve In Thy Spirit, Rejoicing For All That Was Virtuous.

24 With Zeal And With Diligence, This Then Repeat, And Learn To Repeat It With Satisfaction, For Thus Will Ye Walk On The Paths Of Heavenly Virtue; Surely, I Swear It By They Who Into Our Souls Have Infused The Sacred Quaternary, The Seed Of Divine Nature.

25 Never Start On Thy Task Until Ye Have Implored The Blessings Of The Deities.

26 If This Practice Is Faithfully Adhered To, Soon Ye Will Recognize, Of Deities And Mortal Men, The True Nature Of Existence, How Everything Passes And Returns.

27 Then Will Ye Perceive What Is Real, How The Divine Ordering Is Always Impartial, So That Ye Hope Not For What Has No Hope, Nor That Possibilities Should Elude Thee.

28 Humans Ye Shall Observe Whose Sorrows They Themselves Have Created, Wretches Who See Not The Good That Is So Near, And Will Heed Nothing.

29 Few Know How To Help Themselves In Misfortune, That Is The Fate Which Blinds Humanity In Circles.

30 Hither And Yon They Run In Endless Sorrows, For They Are Accompanied By A Grim Companion, Even Disunion Within Themselves.

31 Unnoticed, Never Rouse Them, And Flee From Before Them!

32 Aumen-Zeus, O Free Them All From Sufferings So Great, Or Reveal Unto Each Their Guide.

33 Yet Do Not Fear, The Mortals Are Divine By Race, And Holy Nature Will Reveal And Make Evident Everything.

34 Wherefore, If Ye Have Believed, Observe What I Teach Thee, Healing Thy Soul, And Ye Shall Remain Insured From Manifold Evil.

35 Avoid Forbidden Foods, Reflecting That This Contributes To The Purity And Redemption Of Thy Soul.

The Importance Of The Quaternary Obtained By Addition Is Great In Music Because All The Harmonies Are Found In It.

2 But It Is Not Only For This Reason That All Pythagorean-Theanoians Hold It In Highest Esteem, It Is Also Because It Seems To Symbolize The Entire Nature Of The Universe.

3 It Is For This Reason That The Formula Of Their Oath Was: I Swear By The Ones Who Have Bequeathed The Tetraktys, The Source Of Eternal Nature, Into Our Souls And Unto Future Generations.

4 The Ones Who Bestowed It Were Pythagoras And Theano, And It Has Been Said The Tetraktys Appears Indeed To Have Been Discovered By Them.

5 The First Quaternary Is The One Which We Have Just Spoken: It Is Formed By Addition Of The First Four Numbers.

6 The Second Is Formed By Multiplication, Of Even And Odd Numbers, Starting From Unity.

7 Of These Numbers, Unity Is The First, Because As We Have Said, It Is The Principle Of All The Even Numbers, The Odd Numbers And Of All The Odd-Even Numbers, And Its Essence Is Simple.

8 Next Comes Three Numbers From The Odd As Well As The Even Series.

9 They Allow For The Unification Of Odd And Even Because Numbers Are Not Only Odd Or Even.

10 For This Reason, In Multiplication, Two Quaternaries Are Taken, One Even, The Other Odd.

11 The Even In Double Ratio, The First Of The Even Numbers Being Two Which Comes From Unity Doubled.

12 The Odd In Triple Ratio, The First Of The Odd Numbers Being The Number 3 Which Arise From Unity Being Tripled, So That Unity Is Odd And Even Simultaneously And Belongs To Both.

13 The Second Number In The Even And Double Is 2 And In The Odd And Triple Is 3.

14 The Third Of The Order Of Even Numbers Is 4, And In The Odd Series, 9.

15 The Fourth Among The Even Numbers Is 8, And Among The Odd Numbers, 27.

16 The Ratios Of The Most Perfect Consonances Are Found In These Numbers; Even The Tone Is Included.

17 However, Unity Contains The Principle Of Ratio, Of Limit And Of Point.

18 The Second Numbers, 2 And 3, Have The Side Ratio, Being Prime, Incomposite Numbers, And Measured Only By The Unit, And Are Consequently Linear Numbers.

19 The Third Terms, 4 And 9, Have The Power Of The Squared Surface, Being Equally Equal.

20 The Fourth Terms, 8 And 27, Have The Power Of The Cubic Solid, Being Equally Equal Equally.

21 In This Way, By Virtue Of The Numbers From This Tetraktys, Growth Proceeds From The Limit And The Point Up To The Solid.

22 In Fact, After The Limit And The Point Comes The Side, Then The Surface, And Finally The Solid.

23 It Is With These Numbers That Plato, In The Timaeus, Constitutes The World-Soul.

24 The Last Of These Seven Numbers Is Equal To The Sum Of All Proceeding, As We Have 1+2+3+4+8+9=27.

25 There Are Then Two Quaternaries Of Numbers, One Which Is Made By Addition, The Other By Multiplication; And These Quaternaries Encompass The Musical, Geometric And Arithmetic Ratios Of Which The Harmony Of The Universe Is Composed.

26 The Third Quaternary Is That Which, Following The Same Proportion, Embraces The Nature Of All Magnitudes; For The Place Taken By Unity, In The Proceeding Quaternary, Is That Of The Point In This One.

27 That Of The Numbers 2 And 3, Having Linear Power, Is Here That Of The Line, Through Its Double Form, Strait Or Circular.

28 The Strait Line Corresponding To The Even Numbers Because It Terminates At Two Points, And The Circular To The Odd, Because It Is Composed Of A Single Line Without Terminus.

29 And What, In The Preceeding Quaternary, Are The Numbers 4 And 9, Having The Power Of The Surface, The Two Types Of Surface, The Panar And The Curved, Are So In This One.

30 Finally, What, In The Preceeding Are The Numbers 8 And 27, Which Have The Power Of The Cube And Of Which One Is Even And The Other Odd, Is Constituted The Solid In This One.

31 There Are Two Kinds Of Solids, One With A Curved Surface, Like The Sphere Or The Cylinder, The Other With A Plane Surface, Such As The Cube And The Pyramid.

32 This Is The Third Tetraktys Then, The One Having The Property Of Constituting Any Magnitude, Through The Point, The Line, The Surface And The Solid.
 

The Fourth Quaternary Is That Of Simple Bodies, Fire, Air, Water And Earth; And It Offers The Same Proportion As The Quaternary Of Numbers.

2 The Place Occupied By Unity In The Quaternary Of Numbers Is Taken By Fire In This One, Air Corresponds To The Number 2, Water To The Number 3, Earth To The Number 4; Such Is Indeed The Nature Of The Elements According To Their Fineness Or Density, In Such A Way That Fire Is To Air As 1 Is To 2, To Water As 1 Is To 3, And To Earth As 1 Is To 4.

3 The Other Relationships Are Also Equal (That Is To Say, That Air Is To Water As 2 Is To 3, And So Forth From The Others).

4 The Fifth Quaternary Is That Of Shapes Of Simple Bodies, For The Pyramid Is The Figure Of Fire, The Octahedron The Figure Of Air, The Icosahedron The Figure Of Water And The Cube The Figure Of Earth.

5 The Sixth Is That Of Created Things, The Seed Being Analogous To Unity And The Point.

6 A Growth In Length Is Comparable To The Number 2 And The Line, And A Growth In Breadth Is Comparable To The Number 3 And To The Surface, And Finally A Growth In Thickness Is Comparable To The Number 4 And To The Solid.

7 The Seventh Quaternary Is That Of Societies.

8 Humans Are Its Principle And Is Thus Unity.

9 The Family Corresponds To The Number 2, The Neighborhood To The Number 3, And The City-State To The Number 4; For These Are The Elements Which Comprise The Nation.

10 All Of These Quaternaries Are Material And Perceptible.

11 The Eighth Contains Faculties By Which We Are Able To Form Judgment On The Preceeding, And Which Are Its Intellectual Part, Namely Gnosis, Science, Opinion And Feeling.

12 And Certainly Thought, In Its Essence, Must Be Assimilated To Unity.

13 Science Is The Number 2, Because It Is The Science Of All Things, Opinion Is Like The Number 3, Because It Is Something Between Science And Ignorance.

14 And Finally Feeling Is Like The Number 4 Because It Is Quadruple, The Sense Of Touch Being Common To All, All The Senses Being Motivated Through Contact.

15 The Ninth Quaternary Is That Which Composes The Living Things, Body And Soul; The Soul Having Three Parts: The Rational, The Emotional And The Willful; The Fourth Part Is The Body In Which The Soul Resides.

16 The Tenth Quaternary Is That Of The Seasons Of The Year, Through The Succession Of Which All Things Take Birth, That Is: Spring, Summer, Autumn And Winter.

17 The Eleventh Is That Of The Ages: Childhood, Adolescence, Maturity And Old Age.

18 There Are Thus Eleven Quaternaries.

19 The First Is That Of Numbers Which Are Formed By Addition.

20 The Second Is That Of Numbers Formed By Multiplication.

21 The Third Is That Of Magnitudes.

22 The Fourth Is That Of Simple Bodies.

23 The Fifth Is That Of The Shapes Of Simple Bodies.

24 The Sixth Is That Of Created Things.

25 The Seventh That Of Societies.

26 The Eighth Is That Of The Faculties Of Judgment.

27 The Ninth Is That Of Living Things.

28 The Tenth Is That Of The Seasons.

29 And The Eleventh Is That Of The Ages.

30 They Are Proportional To One Another, Since What Is Unity Is The First And Second Quaternary, The Point Is In The Third, Fire In The Fourth, The Pyramid In The Fifth, The Seed In The Sixth, Humanity In The Seventh, Thought In The Eighth, And So Forth With The Others Following The Same Proportion.

31 Thus The First Quaternary Is 1,2,3,4.

32 The Second Is Unity, The Side, The Square, The Cube.

33 The Third Is The Point, The Line, The Surface, The Solid.

34 The Fourth Is Fire, Air, Water, Earth.

35 The Fifth Is The Pyramid, The Octahedron, The Icosahedron, The Cube.

36 The Sixth Is The Seed, The Length, The Width, The Height.

37 The Seventh Is The Human, The Family, The Neighborhood, The City-State.

38 The Eighth Is Thought, Science, Opinion, Senses.

39 The Ninth Is The Rational, The Emotional And The Willful Parts Of The Soul, And The Body.

40 The Tenth Is Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.

41 The Eleventh Is Childhood, Adolescence, Maturity, Old Age.
